Customer Review: Great once you build it, but not so easy to build

I bought two sets of the 2x4 Basics Shelflinks to build a suped-up work table. I built two sets of shelves for each end of the table and used a flush door for the table top. End result? An awesome, sturdy, big work table with ample storage for my studio space. I'm happy with the end result, but I'm only giving the product 3 stars because it is NOT as easy to put together as advertised. So many testimonials rave about how easy it is to build these by yourself quickly with minimal tools, but here's some tips:
1) You need two people to build these easily - one to drill and one to hold the boards in place where you want them. They shift easily otherwise. If you're really handy, you may be able to get away with doing it yourself... but not me.
2) You need a drill with an extension (or whatever you call it). If you don't have a piece for your drill that extends the length of your drill bit, forget being able to construct the shelf. I had a bad start before I had to go borrow a better drill with extender from a friend.
3) It helps to pre-drill holes (at least on the initial shelves), unless you have a friend holding the boards in place and an awesomely powerful drill.
4) Don't expect the shelf to end up square. Part of this may have to do with the difficulty in getting perfectly straight 2x4's, but more likely it's due to the Shelflinks have a little room in the leg holes for the board to move around. Also, in an old apartment like mine, even if you use a level to get the shelves level before you attach them to the legs, your floors themselves may not be level. In the end, your shelf will be sturdy and strong, but very possibly not square.
In the end, I'm very happy with the result, but starting out on the building process was frustrating. Once I got better tools, it went much better. Just don't believe the testimonials on what a piece of cake it is. And I'm not convinced I couldn't have build comparable shelves without the help of Shelflinks.

Easy-to-Assemble, Customizable Shelving System
