Tools and Hardware Reviews of 3M 8210Plus Particulate Respirator N95, 20-PackCustomer Review: Very Good and Inexpensive Summary: 4 Stars
These are very good and inexpensive respirators that are effective against nuisance dust, sawdust, pollen, etc. I got these as a more disposable option to supplement the other respirators I use on a regular basis. They are very high quality and comfortable for what they are, but they cannot compare to ones that have an exhalation valve to provide relief from moisture and heat build up. I consider these when I have a need for a N95 respirator and it is cool or when I will not be wearing it for a long period. While they are reasonably comfortable, they can't compare over the time with a vented unit.
The straps are very good and lend themselves to frequent and repeated use, increasing the economy of the mask. I've never had one break, and the bands do seem to retain their tension much better than bargain brands. These have a thin metal strip that can be bent to conform to the bridge of the nose to provide a better seal and a custom fit.
When you need a respirator, be certain you match the appropriate respirator to the job you are working on. You'd never use one of these when using solvents, for example, or for an environment where an N99 cartridge-style respirator is more appropriate.
Very high quality, these are my choice for short-term, disposable particulate respirators when the length of the job doesn't warrant a vented style. They provide good economy as well as effective filtration. For the proper application, I recommend these. For superior fit and greatly enhanced comfort at the N95 rating, I go with the 3M surgeon-style masks with the cool flow vent.
Customer Review: Health-care Workers Use Masks Rated N95 Summary: 4 Stars
3M 8210 N95 Particulate Disposable Respirator - the "N95" means that if the mask is properly fitted, it will filter out particles down to .3 microns 95 percent of the time. That's great for particulate matter but not sufficient against flu bugs - yet quite helpful.
The types of viruses that cause respiratory illnesses measure between .1 to .2 microns. That means that while this mask will probably stop most of the flu viruses from getting through, it is not dense enough to stop them all. That is why the product description mentions dust and particulate matter but makes no claim or mention of viruses.
Masks with a high enough efficiency rating to stop viruses are incredibly uncomfortable. I've never worn one but consider that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) advises health-care workers working with SARS patients to wear the N95 mask - same rating as this one. Even the CDC does not expect people to function at work wearing masks with super high efficiency ratings. Therefore I'm not getting a superior rated mask because they are immediately uncomfortable and I might not be able to function wearing one. Health-care workers will be wearing masks rated N95.
The N95 masks are also valued because viruses often travel on bigger molecules such as molecules that contain mucus. N95 will stop all of those.
I would suggest this box of 30 as a good emergency supply and perhaps a better deal:3M 8000 Particle Respirator N95, 30-Pack.
Customer Review: Buy these, instead of those cheap paper masks! Summary: 5 Stars
I used to wear the cheap disposable paper masks, even though they were a pain; the rubber bands yanked at my hair, the edges were scratchy, and they made my glasses fog up so much I couldn't see. But I continued to use them, because I mistakenly assumed that a better-quality mask would be even MORE uncomfortable. After all, it offers more protection so it must be an even bigger hassle to wear, right?
Wrong! Oh, so wrong, and I had no idea until my Dad gave me one of these 3M 8210s. I'm never using those cheap paper masks again. Not only are these much, much more comfortable, they keep the dust out more efficiently too. The stretchy bands are silky and don't pull your hair, the nose bridge is padded with foam, and although the mask is thicker than a paper mask, it is easier to breathe through. Although the entire mask is held tightly to your face, it doesn't chafe a bit and you barely know it's there. And my glasses didn't fog up at all. These masks are a bit more expensive but worth every penny. If you suffer dust allergies, you owe it to yourself to use these in nasty situations. You won't believe how well they work, and best of all, you won't hate wearing them!
Customer Review: What do you mean, "specious"? Summary: 5 Stars
Great for filtering dust. As a bonus, I have also never contracted SARS nor Swine Flu while wearing this mask. I think one of the biggest attractions which nobody has mentioned, however, is that while wearing one of these masks I have also NEVER BEEN ATTACKED BY A LION NOR HAD A STRANGER RUSH UP AND POUR MUSTARD ON MY HEAD! I swear it is true. Why 3M doesn't market those two additional benefits on the box is beyond me. Probably the bureaucratic FAT CATS in Washington behind it. Stupid Obama. Probably not even a US citizen.
I think it is an unintended plus that when I wear this mask everyone knows how serious I am about keeping their dirty, proletariat germs away from me. In what is surely a rare show of respect, when I walk down the street in my N95 Respirator most everyone seems to veer out of my way and avoid contact. Oftentimes this includes refusing to meet my gaze. Why eye contact would transmit germs eludes me for the moment, though as soon as someone who identifies themselves as a doctor answers my online query I will certainly update my post.
Customer Review: Effective. Summary: 5 Stars
I was a little unsure about spending this much money for this many masks, but decided to listen to the reviews and purchased this item. I'm glad I did. These cost more than bulk masks, but they are worth it. The double straps work very well to keep the mask in place, exactly where you want. The flexible metal strip over the nose area is also more useful than I thought it would be in doing the same. I've chewed gum while wearing these and not been concerned about loosening the seal, that's how great it fits.
The only negative thing I can say about this product is that depending on the size of your head, it may be a little tight, and leave temporary pressure marks on your face (nose, specifically) after wearing it for more than 10 minutes or so. This is part of the tradeoff for having a nice tight fit, so it's not that much of a negative, but I thought it worth mentioning for those who intend to keep it on for longer than 10-15 minutes at a time.
Good quality product, nice work 3M!
