Tools and Hardware Reviews of 3M 90541-80025T TEKK Protection Digital WorkTunes Hearing Protector and AM / FM Stereo RadioCustomer Review: Listening to music while you work Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this for my husband. For years and years, he has worn protector headsets while working outside and in his workshop with NO listening to music. Now, he was truly excited to listen to music/talk radio while he works.
I set up the radio stations. 5 AM and 5 FM stations for preset. The enclosed instructions on this were vague. But following the instructions and pressing the menu button I knew the radio station had done the preset. The digital screen would show the preset as m1, m2, m3, m4,or m5. There is a right/left arrow button to search between radio stations. Then the AM/FM dial. There is a place for a stereo jack for your players. The screen will indicate when the batteries are low.
One thing, one radio station would not preset. A local station, too. It could not pick up a strong signal and therefore could not preset. But I succeeded with the rest. He says, "reception is great". We live in rural Oregon.
My husband did say the headset fit better than any other he had used.
He nows takes it back and forth from work as he is a heavy machine operator. He says Peltor is a well known brand.

I have been using this headset while I vaccum. I can hear my stations just fine. Once in a while when I bend over I will hear static for a second or two. I still hear the vaccum, but it sounds like it is far away and muffled.
Customer Review: Peltor 90541 Worktunes hearing protector Summary: 4 Stars
I just received this headset, the eighth Peltor AM/FM headset and third incarnation of these hearing protectors I own. I'm very pleased with the new design. For those who've never owned a set of these, let me assure you that the reception is not the best. Simply moving your head may cause the sound to drop out, which is the reason I gave it only four stars. (If that really bothers you, just connect an MP3 player with the included chord.) It is, however, as good as any of the other seven Peltor AM/FM headsets I own, and seems noticibly better than several of them. The ability to simultaneously protect my hearing in just about any work environment (nail guns, jackhammers, circular saws, you name it) and provide entertainment and news is worth that small quibble--you learn to deal with it. The ease of locating/switching stations (the inconsistent reception can make this problematic) with the digital tuning makes these by far the best set of the lot. I was also delighted to find they use flash memory so you won't lose your presets when changing batteries. Experiences will vary, of course, but I've had only one pair of these fail. If you listen to only one station, get the cheaper dial-tuning model. If, like me, you have a variety of tastes or perhaps want to easily set diffferent stations for widely-spaced worksites, or if you want the ability to connect your CD player or iPod, this is the better set to buy.
Customer Review: what one needs in the yard Summary: 4 Stars
I've already begun to lose my hearing - Maybe it wouldn't have happened if I'd gotten these a few decades earlier.
I bought a cheaper non-tunes version some years ago, and these work at least as well - and with the radio - I've no excuse for not mowing the lawn while the game is being broadcast.
These are not noise cancelling(read really high $), just noise deadening/masking - so you will still hear the roar of the power tool - you won't believe how much it deadens the sound until you remove 'em while operating. Yes, while grooving out on the radio and working, someone can come up behind you and scare the willies out of you. A good excuse to ignore the spouse....(at your own risk...)
Radio reception is adequate on AM-FM, although I wish it were a bit better on FM - but hey, it's workable for an FM station about 25 mi away, 35-40 seems the limit for FM. I haven't tried the MP-3 or AM ranges. Simple controls, digital tuning make this a good radio - only whine is that I occasionally bump the volume switch w/ my collar - my bad, not a radio fault.
Battery life is fantastic - even using lower capacity rechargeable AA cells - quite acceptable for the average homeowner.
Yes, I'd recommend these for anyone who wants to work and listen to the radio at the same time - and protect his hearing.
Customer Review: Does what its supposed to do Summary: 3 Stars
Wears like a normal set of ear muffs, works well with my large head, tuner could be better, some stations that I can pick up with my car radio does not come in on these. I also found that turning your head changes reception so when mowing the yard and listening to my favorite station I get good reception going in one direction but when I turn to mow the other way its very static-y. Also using them in the cab of a tractor or truck greatly limits reception only to the nearest stations. Easy to use tuner with a limited number of presets and a seek feature, all of which are easy to use while wearing. I've since found that for moderate sound protection in the ear sound isolating ear buds work just as well and are less bothersome (don't make your ears sweaty in the summer). Pluging an MP3 player or a phone into these works, though not as loud/clear as I would like. Also you need to be careful not to catch the cord if you're moving a lot or say moving next to a hedge row (I run my cord into my shirt).
I use these when ever I'm working with very loud equipment, but if I'm just mowing the lawn I stick to sound isolating ear buds.
Pro - Good noise reductions, easy to use, not too heavy
Con - A little less radio performance than I would like, sound quality limited by cheap speakers, head position effects reception
Customer Review: Controls poorly designed Summary: 2 Stars
I agree with the majority of the reviewers about the quality of the FM receiver -- it's dismal. However I'm fortunate in that there's one tolerable station with a very strong signal nearby, so I get reception (on that one station) with very little static. All other stations are hopeless however.
The product wasn't designed with a great deal of thought as to the controls. The on-off volume control is located so that if you wear the headphones with the volume control on the right (as most right-handed people will do) it will hit your shoulder or collar as you work, changing the volume unpredictably. This is pretty dangerous as your instinct is to immediately correct the volume, not necessarily a good thing if you're working power tools. The solution it to flip the headphones so that the controls are on the left. I don't think the stereo quality of these headphones is such that flipping the left/right channels is going to make much difference to the listening experience.
A third and final note -- when the batteries get low, the earphones give off an earsplitting beep at random intervals. Given that these headphones are intended as HEARING PROTECTION, what designer thought it would be appropriate to generate a 90 decibel tone in the user's ear?
