Tools and Hardware Reviews of 3M 90541-80025T TEKK Protection Digital WorkTunes Hearing Protector and AM / FM Stereo Radio

Customer Review: Not too impressed.
Summary: 2 Stars

I originally bought these to listen to music via the aux input, but I have yet to get the aux input to work. It says there was a connector included, but I didn't see one in my packaging. If you're like me and have nice set of earbuds, skip these and buy a normal set of over-the-ear muffs. Put your ear buds, route the cable inside your shirt so it's not dangling, and put your muffs on. Now, you've got high quality audio coming into your muffs.

As for the radio, in Phoenix, I have a pretty hard time receiving our main rock station(98 KUPD) consistently. It's a pretty big and powerful station and no other tuners I've owned have any troubles picking up the signal. Plus the volume on these is pretty weak. Turned up to full blast, it's still pretty weak(probably 5 on a scale of 10 volume-wise compared to other speakers/headphones/earbuds).

The one good thing about these things are that they are pretty comfortable. I'd have no problem wearing these for long woodworking sessions. They also do significantly dampen the sound created by the machines.

As earmuffs, they're comfortable and block sound extremely well. For that reason alone, I'll still use them.

As music playing earmuffs, they suck. Use a pair of earbuds under these.

Customer Review: The WORST sound quality I've ever heard!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

After accidentally breaking my old Sony Walkman digital AM/FM headset/radio, I found that there is really nothing available like them anymore. When I found these, I decided to try them since I could also use them while mowing the lawn, working in the shop, etc.

While I didn't have reception issues as some have reported, the SOUND from the Peltor 90541, either AM or FM, is so hollow, nasal, and unpleasant that I cannot tolerate them. No bass, no treble.

Imagine the worst sounding radio you ever heard... OK, then try these and you'll discover your new worst-ever sounding radio! With fresh batteries, maximum volume is very limited, and distorted at that. I'm sure that's by design, so you don't ruin your hearing with extended use, but listening for more than 3 seconds will induce projectile vomiting, in me at least.

I had hoped to be able to use them for news, sports, and talk radio, but they sound soooo bad, all I heard was my inner voice repeating "you paid $60.00 for sound this repulsive - what were you thinking?".

The noise reduction is OK (My 40 year old David Clark protectors are far better), but the radio is useless for me. In my wildest imagination, I didn't think these would sound so awful!

Customer Review: very good for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

the radio reception is garbage, but I mostly use these in the data centre where you aren't going to get radio reception even on a good radio. They work just fine when hooked up to an MP3 player as passive headphones, though. Me, I leave the batteries out and have considered removing the antenna.

Even in places where I am probably not risking my hearing, like the data centre, I find that hearing protection greatly reduces fatigue and allows me to work longer. I've also used these in the office when I don't want to listen to co-worker's phone conversations. They are giant and bright yellow so they are great for when you want to say "I'm working; Don't bother me unless it's important."

Personally I greatly prefer passive hearing protection to the active hearing protection offered in other units that are in similar price ranges. Maybe the really good stuff has better active hearing protection? but all the active hearing protection I've tried (all <$100 which may have been the problem) produced an irritating hissing noise, while these, being passive, just makes everything quite a bit less noisy.

Customer Review: AO Safety 90541 WorkTunes AM/FM Hearing Protector with Digital Tuning and MP3 Input
Summary: 3 Stars

The first problem I had with these WorkTunes occurred when I was ordering them. I had a pair of "PELTOR" WorkTunes. They lasted 5 years and handled a lot of abuse, so I wanted to get another pair of the same brand. When I searched for WorkTunes, these AO Safety WorkTunes came up. Well, they are not the same thing.
They are comfortable, and they provide adequate hearing protection from lawn equipment and power tools such as saws and grinders, but I want to listen to music at the same time and these WorkTunes have very poor radio reception. My previous pair had analog tuning and these are digital. The nice thing about digital is you can't accidentally change the channel by bumping into things, but to get an uninterrupted signal I found that you have to bend the antenna down, so I have had to glue the antenna down to get reception, and I can't even pick up my favorite channel that I used to be able to pick up with the previous pair.
I had read a review from someone stating this exact same problem, but I just thought they were simply too far away from the radio towers, but now I see that it's poor reception from the WorkTunes.

Customer Review: Great product for home use
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned this digital version of the WorkTunes ear protectors for about 2 months and am very satisfied with all aspects of performance. I previously owned the analog version for about 8 years until the radio finally died. The analog version was adequate but worked OK for me as I only listened to a single station which was one of the few that I was able to receive. Changing stations was also very difficult with no display. The radio on the digital model is far superior; I can receive many more stations clearly and the presets and digital display make it easy to change stations. I find the noise suppression adequate even when using a very load chipper/shredder. I rate the comfort level as good for periods of continues use of up to an hour; after that I need a break, then can start again. I tested the MP3 connection and this worked fine; note that you have to keep the volume control set to off on the ear protectors to keep the radio off and use the volume controls on your MP3. The price is also a bargain as you get all the new features for the same price I paid many years ago for the analog model.
