Tools and Hardware Reviews of 3M 90541-80025T TEKK Protection Digital WorkTunes Hearing Protector and AM / FM Stereo RadioCustomer Review: works great, one minor problem, still 5 stars Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased these as an Amazon deal of the day for $40 back on March 7, 2010. They are exactly what I wanted. They block out most of the noise from my lawn mower and allow me to still listen to the Red Sox game while cutting the grass. The reception is fantastic in FM, don't know about AM, who really listens to AM anymore? I have used these doing multiple outdoor activities. Also great at the racetrack where you can listen to the radio broadcast or your scanner while watching the action. The minor problem was that the volume/on/off dial knob popped off one day while working outside. It is plastic knob that slides onto a corresponding spline that sticks out of the headset. I was fortunate to find it. The simple fix, superglue, be sure to pull it off before you lose it and put a drop of superglue inside the knob hole and slide it back on. Done, it has never come off again and doesn't affect the operation of the headset. And one other thing, they work great doing stuff in the house while the girlfriend is vacuuming!
Customer Review: Decent...But Not Great Summary: 3 Stars
I work in the lawn care industry and have owned several of the worktunes units. I have owned two of these particular units and, although I am not impressed with them, I think they are decent for the money. The first one of these I got last year, and it developed a short in the wiring after using it about 4 months. I have had the one I am currently using for about 6 months, and so far, so good. I realize I am fairly rough on them in my line of work. Overall quality is decent.
FM reception is good for the most part. I also like the mp3 jack. I enjoy listening to my mp3 player sometimes while mowing. The main problem is that the AM is almost useless. I do enjoy talk radio, and much of the time you can't get AM reception decent enough to hear anything. Maybe if I am out mowing in a large field and the wind is blowing just right I can listen in.
So, if you want to use it for FM and mp3 music, it's not a bad deal if you can get it under $50. If you want to listen to AM radio, save your money!
Customer Review: Peltor 90541 Worktunes Hearing Protector Summary: 5 Stars
I couldn't be more satisfied with the Peltor 90541 WorkTunes AM/FM Hearing Protector with Digital Tuning. I bought this product hoping it would help my Autistic daughter cope with the louder sounds in her enviroment (going to the mall, etc.). Not only does this product allow my daughter to tolerate all the loud advertising and abrupt unexpected noises of a mall/big box store shopping trip; but she does so with a smile all the while listening to her "Radio Disney" music. Now the strange looks we use to get from people seeing my daughter in agony over the loud noises (hands over her ears, startled, and sometimes screaming) has been replaced with a look of check that kid out with her tunes on. This product is one of the best things I have bought for my daughter outside of her many therapies. I would highly recommend this product to any family who has an Autistic family member.
Customer Review: broken connection - poor signal reception Summary: 3 Stars
I thought the idea of listening to the ball game while mowing the lawn would be great. However i missed more than a few plays due to poor reception. It was tolerable with the major concern being the hearing protection provided. After 6 months or so, the set would cut out when I flexed the muffs to put them on. They worked in my hand while tuning in the station, but when expanding the head set the power would cut off and on. The station would default to something other than my original choice when the headset came to life upon adjusting it so it might stay on. For the $49, I expected a bit more quality. I misplaced my receipt, so I have contacted the manufacturer in hopes of replacing or reimbursement. I would probably give it another shot.
On the positive side, the mp3 player works well and doesn't require batteries to listen that way. You just plug in a patch cord to the jack and you are mowing in style. Luckily for my neighbors, the mower drowns out my vocals.
Customer Review: What a disappointment Summary: 2 Stars
I just recently purchased these headphones because my other Peltors were very beat up but still working. My first pair of Peltors had great reception, great noise reduction, and fit securely on my head even during work. I mow lawns FYI. These new Peltors had digital tuning so I thought these would be easier since I wouldn't have to dial in a station while mowing...I could just press a button. The reception was absolutely the worst I have ever experienced. I was able to pick up 1-2 stations and that was it. I live in an urban/rural area where stations would be about 15 miles from me and I still couldn't listen to them. One time I turned the Peltors on and I hear the same station through the entire bandwidth. These are absolutely junk UNLESS mine were shipped broken. I would not recommend these. I would ,however, recommend the analog Peltors. Sorry I don't have the model number of mine to give you. Hope this helps your decision making.
