Tools and Hardware Reviews of 3M 90541-80025T TEKK Protection Digital WorkTunes Hearing Protector and AM / FM Stereo RadioCustomer Review: So Glad I Upgraded to This Summary: 5 Stars
I originally picked up normal ear muffs for regular loud work that I am planning to do for years to come. Then I decided that it would be much better to just return them to the store to upgrade to these hearing protectors to make it very easy to listen to my music and books while working.
I've used these several times now and have been very pleased with them. I'm sooo glad I went with these just because it makes the time pass so much more quickly when I'm mowing the lawn or cultivating the garden or whatever. It blocks out the noise very well. The sound from the MP3 player is decent. I considered giving it 4 stars because of the average audio quality but I didn't have high expectations to begin with. Every once in a while I get a little static but it doesn't bother me at all. Just seems to be normal interference from operating machinery. I used the radio a little. It worked fine but I pretty much only use the MP3 player.
Customer Review: Helps the time go by Summary: 4 Stars
I've had these for 3 years and just had to replace the batteries for the first time. I wear them every time I mow, trim & edge the lawn in the summer, and when I snowblow the driveway in the winter. Also use it while using power tools. The noise suppression is fantastic, as protecting my hearing is vital to me. I had only used the foam insert ear protection before, and these are far superior. And as stated in other reviews, with these on, you can't hear anyone yelling at you to get your attention.
As for the radio, the FM tuner is great...crystal clear. The AM is inconsistent. Then again, so is the AM reception in my home and car, depending on the station. Still, I often have to find that sweet spot by turning my head to catch a clear transmission. I haven't used the MP3 player.
I would definitely recommend these to anyone who wants good noise suppression with the option to be entertained while you work.
Customer Review: Lousy radio tuner Summary: 1 Stars
I was so excited the other day when I found that Peltor had FINALLY entered the current century and added digital tuning. I've owned and appreciated the original worktunes headphones for several years now, and my biggest complaint was that the analog station tuner would change stations every time I bumped a branch while mowing or whatever. The digital tuner, along with the aux. (i.e. iPod) input was icing on the cake and I bought them immediately.
Unfortunately, when I got them home (in Houston), the first station I tuned in came in very erratically with lots of static. So did the second and third. To make sure it wasn't a result of a passing storm, I tuned in the same stations on a super cheapo radio with an equally short antenna: the stations came in clear as a bell. I tried again the next night. Same result.
This weekend I will reluctantly be returning the new digital version and sticking with the originals.
Customer Review: Don't count on the AM/FM radio feature Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this headset about one month ago. Since that time I have used the headset both inside and outside of my home. The headset is good looking, lightweight and comfortable to wear. I did not notice any discomfort while wearing this headset whatsoever. As hearing protection, this headset works just fine. It muffled the sound of my lawn tractor about the same as my non-audio hearing protection headset. The AM/FM radio feature fails to draw in consistently clear audio. There is drift from one station to another and the number of stations that can be tuned are few (I live in North Port, Florida). However, when I attached my Bose portable CD player, the performance was clear and enjoyable. I do not own a MP3 player but I would imagine that the sound would be comparable to the CD player. Overall, I was a little disappointed but I will keep the headset for use with exterior audio hookups and as basic hearing protection.
Customer Review: Comfortable Hearing Protector, adequate headphones Summary: 4 Stars
This product replaced my previous hearing protector/headphone "solution" that was regular hearing protectors sitting over ear buds in my ears. After a few hours, ouch...
My main goal was MP3 playback rather than radio use, and these fit the bill nicely. They are comfortable, and provide adequate protection for yard work type noise. Audiophile quality, they are not. The radio performance seemed adequate, but I have not tested that as thoroughly as some others here.
One drawback for MP3 playback is that they only provide a pass through, so the MP3 amplifier must drive this headset's speakers. For many small MP3 players, this will drain battery power somewhat quickly. The plus side is that no batteries are required in the headset when used this way.
All in all, I'm pleased with the purchase and would recommend these for the use I described.
