Got this thing to sharpen mostly kitchen knives but after I saw how good it worked I went a little crazy and sharpened every blade in my house. These included a pocket knife, a multi-tool knife, a Swiss army knife, a hatchet, a couple of daggers that use to be just for show, and a 3ft sword. The hand guard worked perfectly, I didn't cut myself once sharpening all those blades.
I noticed the biggest complaint most people had was that this takes off a lot of metal but after sharpening all those blades I've notices it takes off a lot of metal on duller blades while there are very little metal shavings after touching up an already semi-sharp blade. For example, my pocket knife and multi-tool knife were already decently sharp so even after putting them through this sharpener a couple of times very little metal was taken off, where as, even the first stroke of this sharpener over my daggers, all of which were completely dull, left tons of metal shavings on my floor.
So you don't have to worry about sharpening your knives down to nothing over time because once you get them sharp it takes off almost nothing to keep them that way.
