I didn't purchased this product in the hopes that it will help me get the job done quickly, I was more focused on getting perfectly straight lines when I decided to tackle a painting project myself after receiving a quote from a professional painter of $2600. I had 3 rooms with custom white/cream colored crown molding and baseboards (I had no extra touch up paint for the molding in case I screwed up). The new colors going on the walls ranged from a silver gray to a charcoal gray, so there was really no room for error.
I purchased the Accubrush XT Paint Edger Deluxe Kit with the FREE MX Edger for $99.98. I must say, this was pretty pricey considering the plastic used to make the Edgers. I think I would have felt better about it if it were at least $30-$40 cheaper since I ended up only using the XT Edger, and one extra roller. That's it. The quality of the rollers were great. Very easy to clean, and the nap stays nice and soft after washing them. The wooden extension poles are pretty ridiculous. A broomstick pole works just as well. The edging brush was pretty coarse and hard. The XT worked much better than the MX Edger. The shield on the XT has a thin steel blade on the tip which keeps the roller and brush paint inside the shield. The MX doesn't have the steel blade, and the paint goes everywhere with the MX. Ineffective.
The Accubrush XT Paint Edger did work pretty well on the ceiling and the wall. It didn't touch the crown molding once I got the hang of it, which was pretty impressive. The size of the ceiling molding edge I painted was about 1/4" thick and it did very well. I should mention the plastic scrapes against the wall as you glide the edger; had that nails on a chalkboard effect. I didn't find it as irritating since it was doing a pretty nice job with my lines and it kept me off the ladder for the most part.
There were several things I found very annoying while painting the ceiling (or wall) using a pole mount and the XT edger. If you add a little pressure (which you have to so the roller will roll, and the edging brush can make contact with the wall) it would snap off the lock position. When it snaps off (which was VERY OFTEN), it made this really loud sound (as if it had broken off the pole). I found myself covering my head every time it happened reactively. I was convinced it was going to come crashing on my head at any moment. It didn't. It doesn't stay locked at all.
The other issue I had was the plastic shield would constantly pool with paint and so would the edging brush. I'm talking globs of paint. Didn't matter how neat I'd try to be, I raised the shield before dipping it in the tray every time. I still had to continuously wipe it down. If I didn't wipe the shield, it would bleed onto the molding requiring me to get on a ladder to wipe the molding clean. NOTE: You will go through MANY wet paper towels or wet towels using the Accubrush. No doubt.
My baseboards are about 1/2" thick. I really thought it would be the easiest part of my painting project after seeing perfectly straight lines on my ceiling and wall, but it wasn't! It really fell short. It would bleed through. Didn't matter how often I adjusted the height of the brush. I tried using the XT and the MX, but to no avail. Crooked line every time! I cleaned the shield often, it didn't help. I ended up having to tape all of the baseboards and using a regular paintbrush. It did just okay on the molding around the doors and windows. Doesn't do great with thicker molding I found. That was very surprising.
Neither edger goes all the way to the end of the wall which I knew about before I purchased it, and I didn't think I would mind it, but it was challenging trying to get as straight a line as the Accubrush had made. Kind of a silly design. We're talking about 7" or so on every corner of the room, but I guess it's better than doing all 180' of ceiling with molding freehand or taping that many feet off!
Bottom line, I would recommend this if you're painting several rooms with molding on the ceiling and don't want to be bothered with taping, but at $80 just for the XT with no refills, it's quite steep. I wouldn't bother with the MX at all.
I can see this product definitely being worth $100 IF 1) they would just forget about throwing in the useless MX and wooden extension poles, IF 2) they just upgrade the XT model by replacing the plastic body with a metal body, IF 3) they can have the Edger remain in the "lock" position when you need it to stay locked, IF 4) the edging brush were slightly softer (so you wouldn't see the ridge marks on the wall from the strokes of the hard brush), IF 5) the edger could get closer to the corners of the wall and IF 6) the roller would actually roll smoothly on the wall instead of jamming and not rolling at all. If the Accubrush had all of the above, it would be like no other product on the market making it the PERFECT edger by far.
