Tools and Hardware Reviews of Air-O-Swiss 32838 Ultrasonic HumidifierCustomer Review: Humidistat not reliable; Works well with distilled water Summary: 3 Stars
I left a similar review for the AOS7135.
I became wary of inhaling this white dust so I switched to distilled water but it was too much of a hassle to buy 10-14 jugs each week for each humidifier.
I think this will work well for you if your water has low mineral content or if you don't mind buying a lot of distilled water regularly.
The humidistat is rather useless. Mine typically remains at 25% even though 3 other external monitors report 38-42%. So the AOS7135 never shuts off and over-humidifies my room. You might be better off with the less expensive AOS7135 (if you are ok with the looks) or the AOS7145 (if you don't need the heating option).
I returned the unit and purchased the Vornado Evaporative humidifier instead. I use it with the Protec cartridge and make sure to clean it well every week to reduce bacteria build up in the wicks. So far so good.
Customer Review: Would be great if it didn't sound like a cow! Summary: 2 Stars
First of all, I must validate my argument by stating that I own an Air-O-Swiss 7135 as well. That unit has been flawless. It is quiet, humidifies well, and has been hassle free. I recently moved my 7135 to my daughter's room and decided to give the "upgraded" 7142 a try in my own room. The thing sounds horrible! It sounds like a low pitched cow mooing on and off every few seconds. The sound is very disturbing. Not even my dog would sleep in the room with the horrendous cow sound. It just droned on and off all night long and kept me awake. I tried shaking it and kicking it, but it didn't get rid of the horrendous bovine that is now living in my room. I think I'm going to just throw it out my window so I can put it out of its misery.
Customer Review: How dangerous is the white dust? Summary: 2 Stars
On the subject of humidifier dust, the best objective source I've found so far is the EPA: [...]. So apparently the jury is still out. Today I opened up one of my computers that had been wrecked by ingesting humidifier dust from an Air-O-Swiss day in and day out. Because its fan was always operating, it ingested an amazing quantity of the white stuff. I don't see any reason to wait until the EPA figures out whether or not humidifier dust is harmful to me, my children, or my pets. I will try Air-O-Swiss's suggested "fixes" but if they don't eliminate the problem, it's time to change to a different type of device. All things considered, maybe it's smarter to have professionals install a system for the whole house, like the Crane EE-5301.
Customer Review: Waste of money Summary: 2 Stars
When this unit works, it is pretty good. For us, however, it only worked for about 4 months total. The problem we experienced with that unit is that it stops producing steam all of a sudden every couple of months (cleaning and filter changes are done as instructed). We only use it in wintertime, and with the unit being in service for 4 to 6 weeks (had to send it in twice already, and it just stopped working again), we really don't get much use out of it.
There were other reviews commenting on poor quality of this humidifier and horrible customer service- I concur.
Please don't waste your money- the likelihood of this humidifier not functioning properly is very high.
Customer Review: Do NOT buy, if you have hard water... Summary: 1 Stars
I live in Utah and purchased two of these for my home. Within a day everything was covered with white dust, on calling their customer service, they asked for my zip code...they then informed me they are not recommended for my area, due to the hard water, and to return them to the store. Unfortunately not before the dust had got into my computer hard drive and DVD players, rendering them virtually useless.
Why distribute them in a hard water area in the first place ? This is a law suit waiting to happen.
I purchased one Evaparotive type of Humidifier from Sears for half the price and there is no dust whatsoever and it is maintaining a comfortable 50% humidity throughout my house.
