Tools and Hardware Reviews of Powerbuilt 648796 Honda Crankcase Pulley Removal Tool

Customer Review: Order it and do it right the first time.
Summary: 4 Stars

Don't be fooled by what you see or hear on the net about removing that Honda pulley. You WILL need this tool. NAPA had to order it but the warehouse was out. Autozone looked at me like I was talking jibberish. Checker showed it as a loan tool but no stores had ever actually had one at all and they wanted over 50 bucks to order it. For the average home mechanic there is no other way. Your 150psi Craftsman compressor wont touch it. Forget WD40 cause it wont reach the threads where the problem is. Use a torch and risk damage to your seal. The starter bump method wont work on most Honda engines that use this tool because they rotate the opposite way. And a pulley wrench that wraps around the pulley could cause the dampening material inside the pulley to slip making it useless and you will need to buy a new pulley. Only very high-power impact guns usually at automotive shops will zip it off. Make sure you have 2 breaker bars (NOT A RATCHET that can jump teeth) and a friend to help hold one. Use only 1/2inch size tools at least. This tool does not fit very snug or deep so a friend is essential to keep it in place while you break it loose. The bolt is NOT REVERSE THREADED, so don't make the mistake of making it tighter. Use the shortest socket extension possible to minimize flex on your tools. I tried 2 and got over 6 inches of flex before I ran out of room. Using some kind of pipe for a handle extension is OK. Just make sure its strong you have enough room under the car. I used my handle from my 3ton floor jack, and placed it on the handle of the breaker attached to the tool. 4 stars because it fits loose and needs to be held in place. Could be redesigned. Good Luck.

I'm not a husky or strong guy, quite the opposite of both. I've had to call in help to remove a crankshaft pulley bolt before, but after I found out about this tool, I decided to buy one and give it a shot. I was able to break free that stubborn bolt by myself, with just a few well-placed kicks on the breaker bar (car couldn't be raised high enough to use a breaker bar). I placed one breaker bar under that arm on the tool (with the square hole), so that it was closer to the pulley... I let that breaker bar rotate over and jam up against the control arm area to hold the pulley in place. Then I used a longer breaker bar to actually remove the bolt. I don't recommend my method too much but figured I would share. I'll make sure next time that I have the proper clearance to use a cheater pipe on a breaker bar, and a helper to hold one breaker bar. But I'm glad I now have this tool to make the job easier! Is it any wonder there are currently 80+ 5 star reviews? ;-)

For the record, I used this on a del Sol's D16z6 engine, and later test fit the tool in an H22a1 pulley (from a 1994 Prelude) to see how it would fit/work for that engine.

Customer Review: The frustration is over!

Got this wrench to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt from a Honda Civic (regular tools and an impact wrench running 90 PSI wouldn't do the trick) Altough it slipped out of the pulley a number of times, I was finally able to to get it locked in place and removed the bolt # I used a breaker bar and a 3 foot extention butted against the concrete garage floor attached to this tool along with another breaker bar with a long extention, another pipe extender and an impact socket leveraged off of a jackstand attached to the bolt. It sounded like a gunshot when the bolt finally broke loose. New timing belt, tensioner pulley and water pump were installed and the Civic is back on the road. This is a stop gap tool to use in an emergency but not the best choice if you are going to change Honda timing belts often. OK for the home mechanic but not professional grade. I worked for me but you will have to have patience to make it work for you. Incidentally, use an impact socket on the bolt, on the first try, I broke a 1/2 inch drive SK regular twelve point socket!

Customer Review: Buy it before you need it

Ordered it, received it, used it, love it.
If you're ever going to need it, buy it ahead of time. Don't wait until your Honda timing belt or water pump breaks. Luckily when mine broke, I was on vacation from work the next 2 days. Although the overnight shipping was perfect and on time, I paid for it :-(
Amazon customer service even called my phone to tell me it would arrive within the hour, and it did.
This is the perfect tool for the job, if you need the 50mm. Don't order the wrong tool for the job and then leave a bad review just because you didn't know what size you needed.
Don't forget, your torque wrench probably starts at 10 ft. lbs., you need 7 & 9 ft. lbs. I didn't think ahead. Anyway, think about a torque wrench.

Customer Review: Crankshaft pulley removal tools works like a charm.
Summary: 5 Stars

Don't hesitate getting this item if need to remove any Honda crankshaft pulley because it does the job perfectly. There are some tricks to getting the pulley off that doesn't require using this hex key but this makes the job much easier even when using air tools. A must have if using hand tools. It will make life easier once you get it.

Don't let the inexpensive price fool you, this is a quality tool. A very hefty tool made with a thick steel design that will last a lifetime. It won't break or twist like some other designs. Has a good coating on it so it won't rust and makes it more scratch resistant. This one takes a simple 1/2" drive so works with many breaker bars. Fits deeply into the hex of the crankshaft and plenty of space for any socket to remove 19mm bolt. I used some DIY hack tool part in the past and this tool beats them. I've used some cheap stamped steel versions and thick cast aluminum alloy ones that twist or break. Other quality version of this tool require weird attachments handles.
