Tools and Hardware Reviews of Powerbuilt 648796 Honda Crankcase Pulley Removal ToolCustomer Review: fits honda f20c just fine Summary: 5 Stars
used this to break loose the flywheel pulley bolt on my F20c. works very well, fits snug with ample space for deep or even normal socket through the middle.
***BE SURE TO INVEST IN REAL BREAKER BARS!!***
PURCHASING A STURDY 30somthing INCH 1/2" bar is a must, and lesser size sidekick is smart as well!!
i broke a 3/8 socket and wounded another trying to break the flywheel pulley bolt loose using cheater bars on sockets.... bad idea. the fly wheel pulley can be torqued from 200foot lbs to around 300foot lbs!!! id guess it easily gets near or over 300foot lbs torqued with a good 50k on the engine...
it was still a bit of a task even with the true breaker bars, i actually had to put a extra piece of pipe on the 3foot breaker bar for a bit of extra torque!!! the smaller breaker bar had a sturdy heavy duty pipe (from a 3ton floor jack handle) on it to keep it locked against the frame of the engine stand.
definitely a needed tool
good luck!
Customer Review: Does the Job Summary: 4 Stars
A bit tricky to get the thing to stay in the pulley hole - this is probably as much due to the shape of the pulley hole as the tool itself.
Once it "binds up" it's sort of ok. A helper would make the job a lot easier, as you sort of have to make sure the things stays lined up and in place while you apply torque to your breaker bar when removing the bolt.
One thing I will say is that there is no way you are getting a honda pulley bolt off without this tool, however frustrating it is to use. I am not weak, and had to use a metal tube extension on the end of a 3 foot breaker bar, and pull with all my strength to break it free - I actually thought the breaker bar itself was going to snap. I estimate well over 1000ft-lbs was needed. Don't even bother trying with a 1/2" air tool.
For what it is, it works OK, and is a necessity. Even though I'll probably only use it once, it paid for itself.
Customer Review: Great tool Summary: 5 Stars
I used this tool to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt on a 2003 Honda Pilot. Previous attempts using 3 different air impact wrenches yielded no result. Using the Alltrade Crankshaft pulley holder along with a 5' breaker bar finally loosened the 19mm bolt. A great tool, very well made, finished and very durable. I used to use adhoc methods in the previous ~20 timing belts I changed on Honda's to hold the pulley while loosening the bolt but this is the best tool I've every come across. Anyone that is going to remove that bolt (most likely for a timing belt or water pump change) should get this tool.
On a sidenote, I did call a Honda dealership to make certain that the bolt was clock-wise tighten and the service tech said it was (normal bolt threads) and that from the factory they are "very very very tight"/
Customer Review: helpful hints Summary: 5 Stars
This tool is sufficient for removing the crankshaft pulley . It does fit too loose but this is easily remedied by wrapping it a couple of times with a narrow strip of duck tape. When wrapped , gently tap it into the pulley until it is well seated. Then attach a 24" 1/2inch breaker bar and brace it against the floor . At this point an impact wrench would come in handy but the average person does not have a large enough compressor . I rented an electric impact that was not strong enough . Another 24" 1/2inch breaker will work but with only one 12inch extension . This is accomplished by removing the fender and bracing the extension at its mid point with a jackstand . Removing the fender , bumper and headlight is simple and saves in the overall time of replacing the timing belt !
Customer Review: Indispensable tool for working on these Hondas!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you like to do your own semi-major engine work, do not hesitate to buy one of these in advance. Removing the crank pulley bolt without one is an excersize in frustration and risky hacks. I tried it, and was quite frustrated. So I bought this tool. $25 later, and the bolt is off with very little effort. You will need this tool, a 19mm socket (for the pulley bolt), an extension for the socket, and two decently long breaker bars. A long-handled socket wrench, or a socket wrench with a cheater pipe will work fine, too. The wrench/breaker bar you use on this tool has to be 1/2" drive.
Definitely 100% worth it.
Strangely, the tool I received was not an Alltrade, but a Powerbuilt.
