Tools and Hardware Reviews of American Gardener YS24 YardStick 10-Inch 24-Volt Cordless String TrimmerCustomer Review: Poor performer Summary: 2 Stars
If you are looking for a replacement for a gas trimmer, this is not the one. I decided I did not want to drag a cord around anymore but I did not want to worry about a gas engine. So I thought the battery was the answer. WRONG. This one is too heavy. The gas motor is heavy but is well balanced. This trimmer is not balanced, you carry all the weight. Second the cover around the head is too small. Third the trimmer advertises you may turn it around and use it as an edger. Well you can turn it around but forget edging with it. Every time I attempted this the line broke off inside the head. I had to stop, take off the line spool, fish out the line and start over. This occurred every time I tried it as an edger. Last it is underpowered. I used it for about 30 minutes. It did keep running but would bog down when attempting to cut a moderately thick patch of grass.
Customer Review: american gardener yardstick so so Summary: 3 Stars
Jury is still out on this trimmer, thought I would give an electric a try and since I have 1/3'rd acre lot on a cul de sac, I needed extra mobility.
yes, it cuts grass - if you have grass around tree base or thin grass around a light pole, etc. it will do fine for you.
I am still unsure because:
1) only single output line for cutting (not dual line like many cutters).
2) you have to make repeated passes over the top of the grass, cant expect to cut right into the base of a thick batch of grass(not enough power).
I am just staying with grass when I cut but I have alot of landscaped beds in my yard; bordering neighbor fences, and a large deck. It did the job "staying conservative" but I still look at a wooded part of my yard or large weed growth and know I cant go near it without a heavy duty gas trimmer.
Customer Review: Great for light duty trimming Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this trimmer because I was tired of the difficulty starting and keeping my gas trimmer running. At first I kept breaking the trim line trying to use the trimming roller along a sidewalk. I then read the instructions and came to realize that I needed a good trench along the sidewalk before the trimming roller would work correctly without breaking the trim line. So I started using the trimmer in the same manner I had used my gas trimmer and it worked very well. The only negative issue I have is that it only has a single trim line as opposed to the two trim line of my gas trimmer so it is not quite as efficient as the gas trimmer. But I love the ease of use and the thoughtful design that makes it very easy to switch from standard trimming to edging. I definately recommend this trimmer and I am saddened to see that Amazon has discontinued it.
Customer Review: make sure to buy a replacement warranty if you get it Summary: 1 Stars
I bought my Yardstick last summer, wanted to do a neater job with my yard. It worked OK for the 3-5 times that I used it last summer.
Plugged it into the charger recently to get started on yardwork for this season. It went for about 45 seconds before it died. Charged it up for another day or so, took it out for another spin. Nothing happened, it is totally dead. What a waste of money. (I have to say, though, that this is the first product I've ever gotten from Amazon that was a piece of junk.) I contacted American Gardener via email as the yardstick was still in warranty, and they totally ignored my email. 0 points for customer service.
If you want to spend the money to use it for one season only, go ahead. If you want to get more out of it than that, be sure to buy a replacement warranty or someone else's product.
Customer Review: Great trimmer...much better than gas Summary: 5 Stars
I recently made the switch from a gas trimmer to this cordless trimmer and have been very pleased thus far. I have used it a few times and am very happy with my purchase. I have a townhouse, and am very pleased with the battery life and power output. I have actually done my lawn a couple times without charging it. I think this would even be ideal for tackling a single family house with a much bigger lawn than mine based on the endurance of this 24 volt battery. I don't think I'll ever go back to gas trimmers after using this. Dealing with the oil/gas mixture and trying to keep the thing running year after year is a real pain with gas trimmers. It's nice to be able to just hit the button and go! The ergonomics are great and it's easy to switch modes when you want to edge along the sidewalk. I would highly recommend this product to anyone.
