Tools and Hardware Reviews of American Lawn Mower 1414-16 16-Inch Standard Push Full Feature Reel Lawn Mower With T-Style HandleCustomer Review: Reel Mower, Works as Advertised Summary: 4 Stars
Background so you know where I'm coming from: I'm 30. I have mowed lawns using everything from push mowers, such as this one, to riding mowers with attached bagging and everything in between all on a personal level, not professional. I have been mowing lawns since I was old enough to stand behind one.
A couple months ago I bought a new house in AZ and since we live in the desert, I have a very small patch of front lawn, maybe 20-25 square feet total. It's completely groomed, with no large holes, no big tree trunks, nothing in the way, just a small flat patch. This mower is perfect for me. Instead of having to worry about oil, fuel, starting and running a gas mower, I simple push this little guy around. Once we finish our backyard, I'll have about 3-4 times the area to mow back there, but feel this mower will fit perfectly.
The mower came in a single box, and the only assembly was attaching the handle onto the reel, with about four bolts and nuts. You will need to use some tools, a socket wrench and crescent wrench worked great for me. That was all the prep work required.
It takes me about 20 - 30 minutes total to pull it out of the garage, cut the grass, wash it off with the hose and place it back in the garage.
It doesn't and won't cut the grass perfectly in one pass. I typically push down one length, turn around and proceed to cut that same area in reverse. I'll do this along the long side of the lawn, then do a quick 90 deg run, and run one direction in the short side so that in total I've run over the grass three times. If you have longer grass, it will require more work. If you trim it regularly, you may not need the 90 deg run at all. I just found that changing direction helps to get everything.
The mower is heavy in a good way. The wheels are cast iron and the whole thing feels solid. I bought the blade sharpening kit, but haven't used it yet. I plan on keeping this mower for decades if possible. The only thing I could see needing replacement or just swapped out later are the foam covers for the handles. They seem a little cheap and could become brittle or fall apart after a few years. However, I think replacing them would be easy, they just slide on and off.
It is definitely not as loud as a powered mower, but it's not really quiet either. 90% of the noise is the sound of the blades working together, imagine 5 really big scissors rapidly being open and closed, ever seen "Edward Scissorhands"? However, I don't feel as if I'd upset the neighbors if I cut at 6am or 10pm, which I often try to do during the AZ summer.
I enjoy the physical activity of mowing as well. I'm about 5'8" and 160 lbs, my wife is 5'3" and 120 lbs. We can both use this mower without too much effort. If the grass is really tall, you may have to give a little extra umph. However, it's nice to get that physical activity in, while doing something you need to do anyway. I also love the fact it's actually Made in the USA!
