Tools and Hardware Reviews of Aqua Globes AG011706 Glass Plant Watering Bulbs, 2-PackCustomer Review: very pretty! Summary: 5 Stars
I got a set of these and I love them. I use them on 2 indoor plants, and am considering ordering a set for the office. I have quite a lot of plants, and I do have a tendency to give some of them too much love and overwater. These seem to have fixed the problem - I fill them, then don't have to worry about watering those plants at all until the globe is empty. I found that for my 2 plants (in smallish pots - probably 6in diameter or so, one pothos and one arrowhead vine), the globe lasts about 2 weeks. Plants are very happy - not too dry or too wet.
Tip - when you go to refill, sometimes there is dirt stuck in the tip of the tube that just won't shake out, stopping you from filling it. Poke out the dirt with a paperclip or old cake tester and you're fine. Also it takes less time to fill if you do have the water on verrrrry slowly so it doesn't overkill the small tube.
Seems the consensus on colors from where I've seen them is that they are both mostly blue, but one has just white specks and the other has multicolor specks (both very pretty).
Note - I don't know that I'd use these outside. I don't think they're large enough to water an outdoor plant effectively in the heat, and I'd worry about the sun pinpointing through the glass and overheating in a magnifying glass effect (I'm probably just paranoid! The glass isn't smooth, so it's pro be ok - or use in a shady spot).
Customer Review: SAVE YOUR MONEY! Summary: 1 Stars
Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT make the same mistake that I did in buying this product. I have a lot of plants so I've spent over $100 on this nonsense. It is an absolute waste of time and money!
Oh, they look so pretty when initially you put them in... then the time comes to refill the bulbs. Then you realize that half of them are still filled with water because the dirt got into the narrow openings. So you carefully make sure that the bulbs have their holes made for them to avoid this happening in the future and hope for the best. Then you realize that the plants are hungrier than you thought.
WITHOUT the bulbs, you need to feed/water your plants every 2-3 days. Guess what? WITH the bulbs, you still need to water your plants every 2-3 days! Only now, except just watering your plants, you will be spending 5 times more time in filing up the blasted bulbs in addition to watering your plants. So, a 10 minute job becomes 2-person 45 minute job. And for what? The bulbs BREAK at the slightest provocation, they have a hard time standing up until you prop them, the openings get stuffed with dirt and become impenetrable by any means other than a letter opener... It's a mess!
In other words, AVOID LIKE PLAGUE and save your money!
Customer Review: Very helpful for indoor plants Summary: 5 Stars
I originally researched these as a gift for my mother-in-law and then my husband got them for me as a gift ;)
These watering globes have done a nice job for me for the past 5-6 months. I use them indoors for 8-10 inch plants. During the winter, it seemed like the water lasted for 2 weeks, but in the late spring, seems like they last for a week.
Keys:
-thoroughly water your plant before inserting the globe
-use a chopstick or some type of stick to create a hole for the globe's spout
-refill the water prior to it "totally" running out of water. If it goes empty, then dirt will fill the spout. Its not that big of a deal too clean it out, but still, its easier if it doesn't get filled.
-not needed, but sometimes I'll add some water with a cup if I think about it. Probably not necessary, but adds time to your watering globe.
My plants have stayed perky and look great. This was a nice little gift to me. I think they are worth it when on sale. I'm in Texas, I'm not sure these would work outside in our heat - you would be filling them up often. So, I recommend these globes, but mainly for indoor use.
Customer Review: This thing actually works Summary: 5 Stars
I followed the directions exactly, making a smaller diameter hole, filling the bulb slowly at an angle, and being sure that the bulb did not tilt at all once I inserted it into the soil. The bulb works like a charm. The plant I used it on (philodendron) was also a gift from another neighbor. I quit buying plants because I invariably killed all of them eventually by either overwatering, underwatering or plain neglect. The ones I have are all gifts and I feel so bad when they die that I nurse them back to health only to watch them die again.
Not only does the Aqua Bulb work, it works very well. My neighbor gave me one and I almost laughed in her face but I accepted it and thought why not. I was very skeptical and thought it was another useless TV gimmick. I've been had so many times by those TV-offer products, I assume all of them are trash. The Aqua Bulb works. I don't know how it works because it's been at least 3 weeks since I began using it and it's nowhere near empty. I even wonder if that's good or not, but my plant is thriving so I'm here to purchase more. I'm sold.
Customer Review: I like them but... Summary: 3 Stars
These are pretty and work well for small plants but you may need multiples if plant is in anything bigger than 6" pot. Always water plant thoroughly then refill and replace aqua globe. Depending on the plant and time of year -among other factors- water may last 3 or 4 days. I have found that they DO NOT WORK WELL FOR SUCCULENTS. Not sure why; possibly because the plants water requirements are so low that it allows soil in shaft to completely dry before the plant starts to pull water... Don't really know.
The shaft does get clogged with dirt and you'll need patience in order to refill the globe. I'll confess that most of the time it's patience I don't have. I usually end up just watering the plant rather than taking the globe out, unclogging it, getting a bunch of dirt in my sink, then having to slowly refill.
Also, the frequent insertion, extraction and reinsertion of the aqua globe may loosen soil and disrupt roots.
In short, most of the time I have pretty, but empty, aqua globes, decorating, but not really watering my plants :-)
