Tools and Hardware Reviews of Aqua Globes AG011706 Glass Plant Watering Bulbs, 2-PackCustomer Review: Ehhh... Summary: 2 Stars
To start, these things are very pretty, the hand blown patterns are very unique from bulb to bulb. However since they're hand blown not only are each of them different in color patterns but also in the thickness of the stem inside. The pack I had ordered came with one normal sized stem and the other came with a stem that was near impossible to "easily fill" unless I trickled water down into the bulb VERY slowly. I suppose they watered well enough but the amount of water used seems more or less proportionate to the density of your soil so if you have your plants newly potted then they might consume water(or waste, I honestly couldn't tell) in about a day. I recommend this only as a cheapass alternative to asking a friend to come over to water your plants when you're away.
Customer Review: Great for vacationers or lazy plant waterers! Summary: 5 Stars
These globes are great, they look nice and are very functional. In reality you should be checking the globes about once a week to see if there is any water left in them and if not you need to refill. They're great to use when you go on vacation, it helps buy you some extra time before your plants wilt and die. These things are also great if you constantly forget to water your plants since you can give them about a weeks supply at once! The product came quickly and the globes are well packed so they were in perfect condition. Those people who say that the water just runs out of them are not inserting them properly (follow the instructions, I use a knife to make a hole for the globe to go into and just shove it in... easy as that!
Customer Review: good, but Wine Bottle Plant Nanny Much better Summary: 3 Stars
I picked a couple of these up thinking they are pretty and if they do what I need then it will make keeping my plants watered during the summer easier. They work okay, but it is really easy to get dirt clogged in the thin stem. Also they don't hold a lot of water, and are very delicate/breakable.
I was in our local gardening store and found 6451 Wine Bottle Plant Nanny Stakes -- Three 4-packs, which are a ceramic base and you stick a wine bottle filled with water into the base. These were wonderfully. Plus wine bottles are easier to deal with including filling, carrying and such.
Customer Review: Attractive and as advertised Summary: 4 Stars
We used these to keep our potted cyclamen alive during a two week vacation, and they seemed to work perfectly. They were definitely empty after two weeks however, so multiples would be required for a longer absence. It is important to water the plants first before placing a full aqua globe in the pot, or the water will immediately drain out. It is also important to use a dowel or stick to make a hole in the soil approximating the long stem of the globe- BEFORE trying to insert the globe, otherwise the globe stem will get clogged up as you force it into the soil. These were two tips that I read on internet postings before I purchased them, and they were essential to success.
Customer Review: Works pretty well Summary: 4 Stars
I love how pretty these bulbs are, but they are also quite useful. I have four of them, two for indoor plants and two for outdoor plants that are in an awkward, hard to water spot in my garden. They seem to keep the plants adequately watered, sometimes for up to two weeks depending on weather conditions. My one complaint is that it is really hard for me to trickle water in to fill them up. If the hose is on too heavy water just splashes and doesn't fill the bulb. I've also tried dunking them in a bucket of water to fill, but this is slow to fill also, I think just due to the narrow aperture of the stem. Overall I'm very happy with these and intend to get more.
