Tools and Hardware Reviews of Aquasana AQ-4000 Drinking Water SystemCustomer Review: good water, BAD reliability Summary: 1 Stars
As everyone else has pointed out, the filtering is superior, the unit is junk, I am sad to say. Ours is completely shot after 1.5 years...and its out of warranty too. We have been VERY careful to only filter cold water and we try to be very careful to only run it at low pressure, which is tricky with the activator valve acting up after we had it about a year, and sometimes you have guests that don't read the reminder notes you have to have tacked up.
After the activator button problems, the inlet O-ring started to leak. With some fiddling I seemed to have fixed that. Then another "mystery" leak started happening. Turns out the MIDDLE section of threads on the "A" cap are shearing right off the unit.
At the price of the Aquasana I can get a couple of instapure or some other unit and put up with the pricier "per gallon" cost of the CARTRIDGES. But of course I JUST bought a new set of the pricey Aquasana cartridges which last about as long as the unit, I NOW know.
They need to dump some of their slick Marketing money into some BASIC engineering. I design stuff like this for a living. There is no excuse for the poor design of the threads that sheared.
This filter might be good if you have almost no water pressure at your home.
Customer Review: Unit cracked Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the sink top model AQ4000 with dual filters on 9-12-06. On 1-24-06 the right cartridge unit (inside the housing) cracked at the bottom and started leaking quite a bit. It was just sitting on the counter when this happened. We have low water pressure (can't run two things at the same time!) so I know it's not that. We do use a lot of water. Anyway, our 90 day warranty had run out but my husband called the company and, because we are on the water filter replacement plan, they replaced the unit at no charge. Customer service was just great. The new unit came 3 days after we called, so we are in business again. We have enjoyed the system and wanted to keep it.
Follow-up: We have been enjoying the new unit that replaced the defective one. But, incredibly, on Nov 6, 2007, the second unit cracked! It leaks terribly! It is still not even a year old. We called, and because we are on their filter replacement plan, we are receiving another unit. We have to pay for postage, however. The filters run about $45 and last about 4 months for our busy household. Aquasana had a lifetime guarantee as long as you are on their filter replacement plan. So no matter how many times this unit cracks, at least we can get another one.
Customer Review: Great water, good value. Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using Aquasana filters for about 5 years now: 3 years on the first unit and almost two years on the second. The housing on the first unit broke and I hope that Aquasana steps up to correct the obvious quality problem with their product. I have never had a problem with slow water flow even though I wait about 8 months before I replace the filters. By 8 months, it is slower than the first month but not unreasonably slow. Without a filter, my tap water tastes terrible and leaves deposits in my coffee maker. This filter system resolves both these issues and is much, much quicker than the Brita and other decanter-type filters. In all fairness, I have never tried other filter types, but I am very happy with my Aquasana and do not plan on changing unless the quality gets worse.
In short, the water quality is excellent and the price is not bad when compared to comparable filter systems. I look forward to the day when Aquasana improves the quality of the housing unit and I really hope that they do not compromise water quality (filters) in an effort to increase water flow. I would much prefer waiting an extra 10 seconds for better quality water.
Customer Review: Great water, easy to use - Just love it! Summary: 5 Stars
I've read all the previous reviews and am shocked! I've had my AQ4000 unit over a year and a half, have changed the filters, have high water pressure, and not one problem. Easy to install, maintain and no issues with the filter button, housing, filters, or anything. Only one issue is that the actual pressure that comes from the unfiltered water is too low to do dishes. My water pressure is very strong without the aquasana hose unit, so I know it's not that. We have two people in our house and don't use it by the glass. I fill up jugs (not the light plastic, but heavy plastic to avoid chemical leaching in to the water - glass is best, though), and make iced tea and lemonade by the quart, but the fill time is surprisingly good compared to faucet-mounted filters that are inferior as far as water quality and per gallon cost. No problem removing old or installing new cartridges and got the replacements for an excellent price right at the Aquasana web site. I did not join the water for life program. I get a reminder from Aquasana and it's cheaper to just do it on my own.
Customer Review: The best. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought mine directly from the manufacturer about a month ago, and I don't know how I've lived without it. The water at my apartment is absolutely disgusting. You can seriously almost 'taste the fluoride', and you can literally smell the sulfur and whatever else is in the soup coming out of my faucet. With this filtration system installed the water is delicious. Noticeably better than any Pur/Brita water I've tried in the past, yet it doesn't taste 'empty' like perfectly distilled water because it's designed to retain some trace minerals. It's perfect drinking water.
I signed up for the 6 month auto replacement program for the filters (Water 4 Life), which costs $8 a month, automatically debited from checking account, and shipped to your door with no additional shipping charges. The filters have a 500 gallon limit, so that's up to 2.74 gallons a day at 9.6 cents per gallon.
Setup was so easy that it's not even worth explaining here.
Not a whole lot more to say, I couldn't be happier!
