Tools and Hardware Reviews of Aquasana AQ-4000 Drinking Water System

Customer Review: A good compromise
Summary: 5 Stars

What type of water is the best water to drink?
Reverse osmosis?
Distilled water?
Spring water?
Alkaline water?
Ionized water?...
I read about many of them, and many have their detractors or defenders.
The common sense would be to drink water that is the closest to its natural state, which is spring water. Now the industrial and chemical pollution (including the use of plastic to store water) has reached to the spring.
I found the Aquasana filter to be a good compromise. It is not perfect, but it is good for the house, in the shower or as drinking water.
My water tastes good, and many friends have complimented me about it.
A common sense would be to not always drink the same type of water. Alternate.
Aquasana filters most of the bad elements found in municipal waters.
Arsenic 5 won't be eliminated 100% but if you follow my advise above, you would realize that this filtration system does a good job.

Customer Review: UPDATE DEAD @ 19 months - wish I could change to 1 star!!
Summary: 5 Stars

On Thanksgiving day '08 I heard a bizarre noise in the water filter and I didn't have water coming out of the spigot any longer, the housing appeared to be leaking, but not over the edge of the unit (I was wrong) since the unit's filters were so difficult to change I couldn't do it on my own - I ordered a new one from Culligan which my son installed for me today, a week later. Stupidly, I didn't realize that thing actually was leaking over the top and it ruined the flimsy cabinet floor. When he pulled the unit out the entire housing at the top of the filters was cracked to bits...it just ruptured like a balloon - you pay $100 plus bucks for this thing and it doesn't even last 2 years...then come to find out, I'm the lucky one for it to last that long!

Don't buy this, the water was good, the flow was VERY slow...but the unit dies. Why put yourself through that. I'll let you know about the MUCH cheaper Culligan I bought with the easy in - easy out filter!

Customer Review: great product
Summary: 5 Stars

I own this product for more than a year now and I don't understand why all the negative reviews!! Changing the cartridges is pretty easy, you have to grease up the o-rings when you change them, this is all explained in the instructions, and the grease comes with the cartridges. The whole assembly is made of plastic so yes, you have to be careful not to overtighten things, just be gentle and tighten just enough to seal everything. This is also explained in the instructions to tighten and check for leaks.
If you just throw everything together and tighten with a wrench like you were tightening a bolt on your car then it's your fault.
The water is great, the replacement cartridges are easy to find. Most of all this is the best countertop filter as far as performance (i.e. poisons and pollutants that it can remove). It costs $10/mo in cartridges for all the water you can drink!
I would highly recommend this filter, I am very happy.

Customer Review: Until there is a better product, I will use Aquasana
Summary: 3 Stars

We've been using the under sink Aquasana for about 4 years now. Yes, it's a pain to change filters. I had to keep notes to remind myself each year to tap one of them on the counter to get it out after opening the casing, and it does take a little work to get the seal tight to stop leaking. I keep it in a bucket under the sink instead of mounting it.

The filters are expensive but the first year I measured how much cold tap water we filter and my family of 2 doesn't come close to the total capacity so we let it go a few more months than suggested. Would be nice if they had a smaller capacity unit at a smaller price.

Right now I need to buy a new unit since one of the filter casings is jammed and won't open. Broke the tabs on top trying to get it open. Did some research and it seems there are no other reliable products so until a company makes a better filter, I will order another Aquasana.

Customer Review: Too many problems
Summary: 1 Stars

Filters are much more difficult to install than I think they should be, unit consistently breaks or has a problem every few months. The white plastic filter housing has broken twice (see photo) and I've had to replace the faucet/dispenser at least once because it constantly dripped or even poured. I am now on hold to get another part since I am a "Water 4 Life" subscriber for about $100 year - which includes two filter changes and warranty. Eventually I will probably spend the time and money to get a better unit.

UPDATE 2008-11-29: After the water filter housing broke a third time, I requested that they send me another one for free which they did (no shipping charge) (I am a Water4Life customer). They seem to have redesigned this part so hopefully it will not break again.
