Tools and Hardware Reviews of Garden ComposterCustomer Review: Back to the drawing board for the engineers... Summary: 3 Stars
This item gets five stars from me for cleverness of design: how it snaps together using a minimum of different pieces, the top flaps are clever and the design of the sliding door in the guides (which are part of the sides), and the the molded-in guides for the anchoring posts. Where the bin falls short is in the engineering: after two week's use-- with the bin full of rotting grass-- the bottom sides are bulging. My guess is from the loading on the walls exacerbated by the heat being generated by the pile, The sliding door is barely held in place. I wonder how long it will be before the walls distort enough to cause the sliding door to fall out.
I haven't had the unit long enough to make usable compost (six to eight weeks, if the pile is "turned" correctly, is my experience gained from having a pile at my previous residence), but the pile is aging nicely, thanks to the Yard Butler [...] One other con: it really needs a floor. This is to keep out all the neighboring tree roots in search of nourishment.
UPDATE:
It didn't take long for the bulges to grow and allow the door to fall out of the guides. Here's how I solved it (at least for a couple of years): I drove 1/2" dia. dowels ( x 3 ft. long) down the two front openings (created by the joining of the side and front pieces). This took enough bow out of the sides to allow the door to stay in. Granted, wood will rot, but the dowels are somewhat shielded from the elements and might last a few seasons.
Customer Review: Clumsy assembly and not Sturdy Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this bin last season and have regretted it every since. The top access doors are VERY difficult to open and when opening they fly off the mounting. After opening these doors are just as hard to latch. Most times I have to remove the entire lid.
When aerating the contents the compost tends to stick to the sides of the bin and while lifting the contents the bin comes apart. The side doors are useless, since the material wont let them easily slide upwards.
The only redeeming part of this bin (other than it is already paid for) is that it is expandable, but than who can stand that high???
Find an alternative, this is not a good buy.
Customer Review: Good choice for inexpensive composter Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for my first composter and wanted something large enough but that didn't cost a fortune. A spinning barrels would have been nice to make it easier to mix the pile, but they were too expensive. And others seemed too small for what I would need. This one seemed to be a good compromise and was relatively inexpensive compared to most.
So far I am happy with this composter. It is literally a snap to put together, with snap in place panels. It seems to be relatively durable and is attractive enough. I've already filled this one up and am just waiting for some black gold. Recommended.
Customer Review: Functional, affordable composter Summary: 4 Stars
Although I really wanted one of those spinning composters, the price was too prohibitive. However, I'm quite pleased with this "2nd choice." It was easy to assemble, seems sturdily made, and is easy to fill. It's also compact enough to fit into tight spots and is less conspicuous than I first thought it would be. At this point, I've only had it for few weeks, so I don't know how quickly or well it makes compost. But based on how it's performed so far, I would recommend it as a good value for anyone looking for a sturdy enclosed composter. (I'll report more when the compost is done!)
Customer Review: Great Composter! Summary: 5 Stars
I began a juicing/raw food diet, and was discouraged by all the vegetable waste going into the trash or down the disposal. I was put off by the price of the spinning composters, and settled on this. But I'm so pleased with my purchase; it was easy to put together, is not conspicuous in my yard, and so far, seems to be making fantastic compost! I've made a couple trips to a local equestrian center to augment my compost with shavings/manure, I make sure I keep the mixtuer moist, I've had no issues with smell or critters. Definitely would recommend this product.
