We purchased these units because they are "plug compatible" with the ten-year-old BRK models (#5919) that were installed throughout our house - this would allow me to install them without re-wiring. Those older units were somewhat aggravating for reacting to over-enthusiastic kitchen activity but at least one could say they were detecting actual smoke. Only very recently have two of them been giving the occasional truly-false alarms... A quick read showed that the 5919s are supposed to be replaced after 10 years and I was initially glad to find these 7010s that would plug right-in to the existing wiring for the older units.
Although the 7010 is touted to have much-improved resistance to "false alarms" we had a sadly different experience.
The first night they were installed we had two instances of false alarms which would not even turn off using the reset button. At three in the morning, needless to say, there was no cooking smoke and no vacuuming or any other activity of the sort to stir up even a little dust.
After the second false alarm I pulled the plug on the units and they sit on a shelf right now.
I purchased two of these to qualify for Amazon's free shipping with the intent of buying the remaining six needed for our house once these had been verified as actually being plug-compatible with the 5919. I'm definitely glad I didn't buy those other six but still a pretty disappointed customer.
ALSO NOTE - If you are buying his unit to directly replace older 5919's note that the "base plate" for the 5919 is not compatible with the 7010 - so you can't just remove your older units and pop-in the 7010's. You will still have to spend some time up on a ladder unscrewing the old base plates from the ceiling and installing the base-plate for the 7010.
Description of BRK Brands 7010 Hardwire Smoke Alarm with Photoelectric Sensor
The BRK hardwire smoke alarm with photoelectric sensor is designed to reduce common "nuisance" alarms. It's an excellent choice for installations in or near kitchens, near fireplaces, or in hallways directly outside bathrooms, utility rooms, or other areas prone to steam. This alarm is also a popular choice for hotel/motel applications.The 7010 AC-powered smoke alarm with photoelectric sensor includes these features:
- Photoelectric sensor which is more effective at detecting smoldering fires which smolder for hours before bursting into flame.
- 120-volt AC inter-connectable (with maximum 18 compatible devices). The alarm can be interconnected with up to 12 other compatible smoke alarms and six compatible devices like bells, horns, repeaters and door closers. If one unit triggers an alarm, all smoke alarms in the series will sound. Power indicators show which unit in the series initiated the alarm.
- Quick plug-in power connector for easy installation.
- Alarm indication which in an interconnected system, automatically identifies which unit initiated the alarm.
- Optipath 360 technology allows 360-degree access to the layer of air on the ceiling or wall that carries the fire signatures (smoke, combustion particles and volatile components).
- Single test/silence button which both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality.
- Locking feature for tamper resistance.
