Tools and Hardware Reviews of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup, Single Individual from Contractor Pack

Customer Review: 3 days and counting of random beeping...
Summary: 1 Stars

I am about to tear these things out of the ceiling. It's 5am, and it's the 3rd night of beeping by these...

When I bought our condo 3 years ago, the developer hard-wired these into all the units--so we all have the same problems. Each condo unit has 2 alarms networked together. First, EVERY OTHER time I use the oven, the fire alarm goes off. In 3 years, we are at 100% false positives with over 100 "fire alarms" in my unit alone. We have a routine to deal with it--we stand under one waving a dishrag until the alarm stops. These false alarms are so bad that everyone in the building ignores them because they go off whenever someone cooks. We have to forewarn guests that the alarm will go off if we're cooking--it's pathetic. In addition, they are made of very flimsy, cheap plastic. Pull the cover off a few times and you'll be throwing away bits and pieces of white plastic or the battery pack won't stay in.

But the big problem started a few days ago... Our neighborhood had a brownout (not a blackout) during the night that lasted for 6+ hours. For whatever reason, every unit's BRKs started beeping during the outage. What's the point of that "feature"? WE KNOW THE POWER'S OUT--save what's left of the batteries. So, over 100 units in the building have their BRK smoke alarms incessantly beeping during the outage. The only way to stop the beeping was to remove the batteries--not the best choice given the need to use candles during the outage... But even after the power came back on, they were still doing the same--beeping in unison. Apparently, they have to be manually reset in a very specific way after a power outage. Holding down the test/reset button for 5-10 seconds will perform a "test", not a "reset"...

How to do a reset: power down AT THE BREAKERS, remove batteries, hold the test/reset for 20 seconds, power up, and install batteries. This routine worked in most, not all, of the homes in the building... The management office sent out e-mails to all the owners with this info, but eventually had to send crews of employees to reset unit owners' systems. (Some loft units have 12-13 foot ceilings). This seemed to resolve issues where both detectors were beeping in unison, but it created another one...

Since the detectors were running for hours on battery power, logically, I & others decided to replace the 3-year old batteries. Big mistake. Now, the BRKs chirp after a few hours with the new batteries. It's beyond frustrating. Three days later, it's 5am, and I can still hear random beeps from various units down the hall. So, the 3-year old batteries are going back in for now... That should stop the beeping for the next few hours...

In a few days, an electrician friend of mine is going to disable mine permanently, and I'll buy regular battery-operated smoke/CO detectors... Enough is enough.

CONTRACTORS & DEVELOPERS BEWARE: These things are cheap, which you'll like. But you run the risk of warranty claims or landing in small claims court, which you won't like. These are poorly designed & engineered and could leave you with liability.

Description of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup, Single Individual from Contractor Pack

Introducing the revolutionary BRK 9120 series smoke alarms which have been redesigned from the ground up. They install faster, perform better, and are even smarter than before. All of these improvements help reduce nuisance alarms and save you time and money. BRK Electronics smoke alarms are designed to be easy to install, easy to maintain, and quality-engineered for years of virtually maintenance-free service.

The 9120B AC-powered smoke alarm with battery backup includes these features:

  • Ionization sensor which helps detect fast flaming fires that consume combustible materials rapidly.
  • 120-volt AC inter-connectable (with maximum 18 compatible devices). The alarm can be interconnected with up to 12 other compatible smoke alarms and six compatible devices like bells, horns, repeaters and door closers. If one unit triggers an alarm, all smoke alarms in the series will sound. Power indicators show which unit in the series initiated the alarm.
  • Latching alarm indicator which automatically identifies which unit initiated the alarm.
  • Smart technology to reduce nuisance alarms.
  • 9-volt battery backup for peace of mind during power malfunction.
  • Single test/silence button which both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality.
  • Perfect mount system including a gasketless base for easy installation and new mounting bracket that keeps the alarm secure over a wide rotation range to allow for perfect alignment.
  • Mounting bracket lock for tamper resistance.
  • Dust cover to keep unit clean during construction.
  • 10-year limited warranty.
All BRK Electronics smoke alarms meet UL 217 standard and are listed with the California State Fire Marshal. They use the new UL mandated repeating 85-decibel alarm horn pattern. 10-year limited warranty. This unit is approved for sale in Oregon after new revisions on law HB2586.--Bree Norlander
