Customer Review: Say goodbye to sleep

I just got done ripping these things out of my ceiling. That is the last night I will spend with these things going off for 2-3 beeps once or more in the middle of the night. I called BRK and asked them about it and they just said to replace all the batteries and vacuum them out. I did that and it made absolutely no difference. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why they go off. I have also had them go off for a solid block of 5 to 10 minutes at 4am. At that time, they did not behave as they were supposed to with the red LED according to the manual either. I checked the Better Business Bureau site and BRK has an unsatisfactory record with them as well. When I inquired with BRK customer service about the behavior, all they would say is they have been in business a long time. Evidently that means the products don't have to actually work to sell now. So I am incredibly disappointed with the item and the service backing them up. As a side note, when I was discussing the middle of the night problems with a neighbor, he said he had the same problems with his until he switched them all out.Customer Review: Absolute Junk-Do Not Buy!

We have a brand new home built less than a year ago. These smoke alarms intermittently and randomly set off single piercing beeps loud enough to wake you up. They are not battery alerts, which are chirps that occur once per minute until you change the battery. All lighted indicators on all the units (we have 17 of them) indicate they are working properly, yet BEEP, there went another one! The problem is you can't figure out which ones are doing it since they are completely random and coming from various areas of the house. Changed all the batteries in all the units to try to stop the insanity. Nothing. Tried to contact the company but they have no email address on their website. Called them and they said it was dust. I told them they were brand new and I checked every one of them and they are immaculate. HMMM, can't figure that out.
Unless you want to hear mind-piercing beeps every so often with no reasoning behind it, DO NOT BUY this product. I would prefer to be water-boarded. We are having them all replaced with another brand.

I bought 5 of the BRK 9120B alarms back in January 2009. So far, no issues with false alarms. These units replaced an older BRK 86RAC model that was originally installed with my house more than 10 years ago.
The installation was relatively easy, but the connections did not exactly fit from the old to the new models. That was an easy fix with splicing the wire connections to the old. There are many reviews that have issues with the batteries chirping and so forth. However, I have not seen that happen on any of the units I bought.
A criticism on the units is that I don't like the location where the batteries go in. On Kidde units that I have seen, the front load is much easier to work with than up on the sides. Because of this and having to splice connections instead of being an exact fit, I dropped it 1 star.
Overall in my experience, the BRK 9210B has been a good unit to work with. They are much better than the 86RAC units that were installed previously and expect them to continue performing well.

I am now up at 3:30 a.m. with my husband as we are disabling the 4th one of these that has gone off, chirping about once every minute. They typically all decide to go off in the middle of the night, waking us up. He climbs up on a ladder and tries to vacuum it out. It still chirps. He puts in a new battery, which according to instructions inside the alarm itself, is the reason for the chirping. It still chirps. At this point, you are screaming every expletive that comes to mind that early in the morning. You then take out the battery and unplug it because that is the only way to make it stop beeping. Yes, this means you have a smoke detector that no longer works. The other review that says this is a defective product is exactly right. Save yourself some money and a great deal of frustration and buy another brand. If representatives of the manufacturers read these reviews and do not fix the problem, they will be liable for punitive damages when homeowners who have disabled these smoke detectors die in a fire.Customer Review: The Day the Firemen Came - Twice

My husband was in Boston, I'm home with the children. All smoke detectors started going off. Spend 30 minutes looking for nonexistant fire. Can't get the $*%&^^$ things to stop. After 40 minutes of trying to stop the stupid things, I call the fire department - they come and find defective smoke detector in basement. Firemen leave. Twenty minutes later, smoke detectors go off again. Again, can't get the $*%&*#$ things to stop. Again call the fire department - now the one in the upstairs hall is defective.
We now have three or four missing smoke detectors. Husband just got on Amazon to replace smoke detectors. He calls me in here to read all of the negative reviews because he thinks they are funny. Wanna know what I think is funny? Even though he's read everyone else's reviews HE NOW WANTS TO REPLACE THE MISSING SMOKE DETECTORS WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE SMOKE DETECTORS AS OPPOSED TO REPLACING ALL OF THEM WITH SOMETHING Someone, please, shoot me now.
