Tools and Hardware Reviews of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup, Single Individual from Contractor Pack

Customer Review: Piece of junk
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this product under the name of First Alert Model SA300, which is distributed by BRK Brands in Aurora, IL.
Less than a year ago, we installed this unit in our basement. Two nights ago, it chirped its 'low battery' signal. I de-mounted the unit and purchased a 9V alkaline battery. While attempting to re-install the replacement battery, I noticed just how cheaply the unit is made. The battery 'carousel' which opens to the side closes 'loosely'; as a result, the battery does not have an opportunity to make appropriate contact with the circuit board within.
What I now have is a strange-looking paperweight which is good for nothing. In essence, I purchased a 'use it once, throw it away' product. Because of this dissatisfaction, I will not buy another First Alert product, and I intend to show our local Fire Department this defective unit.

Customer Review: BRK = JUNK
Summary: 1 Stars

This product gets one star from me only because I could not give it a 0.

I am sure that the builder installed these in my home because they were the cheapest thing around. They have been awful. After a month in the house, we had to completely disconnect one smoke detector because it would not stop chirping after repeated battery changes, cleaning, etc.

The others chirp at random, even after having batteries changed.

Sometimes all of the alarms go off, for no apparent reason at all.

You can hardly open the compartment where the battery is housed and the battery does not go in easily.

Terrible. I can't say enough bad things about this company. I am sorely disappointed and will never buy from this company again...period.

Customer Review: These are Junk
Summary: 1 Stars

These detectors should be recalled, I believe the majority of them are defective. I think this stems from the way the back up battery goes in. You place the battery in a swing out type little plastic door, that when closed, pushes the battery terminals in place. I don't believe this gives a good contact and is what is causing all of the reviewers here to have a similar experience. A chirping sound that usually wakes you up around 3 AM. I just replaced the battery on one of mine 2 days ago, and it is now chirping again. I believe vibrations in the house cause the contacts to seperate. Very very poor design. I'm replacing all of these and wouldn't take another set even if they were free as an untold number of good batteries have been thrown away thinking they were the problem.

Customer Review: Holy Smokes. Im not the only one!
Summary: 1 Stars

So basically, we've been having this smoke alarm (we have 2 of them) they've been going off randomly, for random moments for like four or 5 months now in the middle of the day and middle of the night. I never thought to look it up on the internet but apparently this isnt an isolated incident. These things suck. If you are planning on buying one DO NOT BUY it. I am surprised to see that people actually gave it good reviews. It must be the employees of BRk, because come one really? Who would think to review a smoke detector, unless it sucks or is acting up?

Anyway, stay away. I will try the fix that someone mentioned in their review and hopefully that will solve it. Though, it shouldnt have this damn problem anyway. Maintainence has been here 3 times already.

Customer Review: Going insane
Summary: 1 Stars

Ditto to the first review of this product. Batteries in these things seem to only last a week at best. I have replaced all 6 batteries in just the first 3 weeks of living here!
But that is not the worst of it. Aside from getting an annoying beep every once in a while for the battery itself, occasionly, the actual smoke alarm (always around midnight) goes off for no particular reason. It is 3 beeps, indicating smoke. And the 3 beeps occurs 3 times in a row, just long enough to wake up the entire house, since they are interconnected and all go off at the same time. I went throughout the house, and there is no sign at all of any fire or smoke. I don't even have a fireplace! Unless you want to be tortured on a regular basis, stay away from this detector.
