Tools and Hardware Reviews of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup, Single Individual from Contractor Pack

Customer Review: BRK Brands 9120B Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery
Summary: 5 Stars

I replaced 10 BRK units that were in the house when I moved here in 2001. They had been acting up and chirping frequently. While I was away on a recent business trip, all the alarms were activated at 3:00 AM. My wife was home alone, and went through amazing machinations to deactivate them. There was, gratefully, no smoke to cause the alarms to activate. So I ordered ten of these units to replace the old ones. Installation was fairly easy, and they have been quiet ever since. I like them, and feel that they were reasonably priced. They were delivered right on time, as well.

Customer Review: BRK Brand Hard-Wired Smoke Detector
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased these as replacements for existing hard-wired smoke alarms. They were very easy to install and came with a 9-volt battery. Perfect for our needs, but should only be purchased if you are hard-wiring your new home for smoke-detectors or replacing hard-wired smoke-detectors. Our old ones (same manufacturer but older model) all gave out within the same six months. I believe that's because we didn't test them on a monthly basis so the internal capacitor built up enough charge to fry the unit. I suggest pressing the test button regularly to prevent that from happening.

Customer Review: BEEP, BEEP!
Summary: 1 Stars

I've had 7 of these in my house for 2 years now, and I'm going to replace them. Like many of the other reviewers, I have random beeps from these. It's fairly infrequent, but happens once every couple days, and is a long beep that lasts 1-2 seconds. I've taken all of them down, replaced batteries, cleaned them out with a vacuum cleaner, and did all of the "tricks" people have posted. Nothing works. They still beep, the red light blinks, and nothing in the manual describes this condition.

If you care for your sanity, do not buy this model.

Customer Review: Late night alarm clock
Summary: 2 Stars

I have to agree with the poster who mentioned random alarms. Our house came installed with 9120B units. Infrequently, one of them will trigger (briefly -- 1-3 beeps) overnight. I found a reference on their web site that mentioned possibility of false alarms when power substations were switching.

The first time it happened, it really freaked me out. Before the sound stopped echoing in the house, I was 3 rooms away from the bed shouting "fire! fire! fire!". It took me several hours to calm down enough to sleep. Not a happy sight.

Customer Review: I'm 5 minutes away from ripping them all out
Summary: 1 Stars

I have the same review as everyone else. These things seemingly beep in the middle of the night, and scare our 2 year old out of his mind. Replacing the batteries doesn't seem to work, I've burnt through a 12 pack of Duracell D's in the past six months, with only 7 detectors. As I write this, I'm taking long deep breaths and trying to calm myself because I too am ready to discharge a weapon directed at these things.

When house was remodeled, these came installed. Warning, do NOT buy this brand. Not kidding. REDRUM.
