Customer Review: Simple Concept, Easy Installation, Questionable Price

Easily put, a very simple product indeed. I purchased this product to help reduce the negative drafts and leaks we've experienced the past few years with our 3'x4' attic fan vent. After an energy audit confirmed just how much air was begin exchanged in the winter we figured we needed to do something. Also not helping the case is the fact that the thermostat is located nearly right below the attic fan in the hallway...most likely influencing the heat timing. However, like many homes our attic fan is in the middle of our attic and is now not easily accessible after installing new insulation.
This product is as simple as simple gets. In the box your receive a 4'x5' piece of thin wrapping insulation, a long strip of velcro, and a roll of white electrical tape.
Installation was actually very easy. Our metal fan vent has a 2 inch frame which is more than enough space to lay down the velcro. Once this is done, then peel the backing off the velcro and carefully attach the silver side of the insulation to the mounted strips. It is important to make sure you have the insulation tight, since once the insulation touches the adhesive on the velcro, you won't be able to adjust it any further. Once the insulation is attached, makes sure to press it hard onto the adhesive tape and then peel back the sheet of insulation. What should have happened is the velcro strip should have separated with once side on the fan metal and the other side on the back of the insulation. Then, trim the insulation to fit the velcro and reattach to the fan vent. While tricky, use the electrical tape to seal the edges and high the edge of the insulation.
The color is a little more grey than white, which is to be expected given how bright ceilings are painted now. So, be prepared for a bit of color difference. This product is so simple that it could be duplicated in some way for less money and likely less favorable appearance. However, finding white insulation like this is hard to do. It will be interesting to see how well this velco is removed as it makes on heck of a bond with its metal surface. Some have suggested using magnetic tape instead. However by time you spend the $ for the magnetic tape, you might as well add another $10 to the price and then risk not having a good air seal.
Summary: I think this is a simple, but valuable product. When the cover is removed, the appearance of just velco strip could be a little unsightly and the whites don't always match up. However, it does appear to stop all inflow into the house from the vent which is what it is designed to do. Will we save the $35 in energy costs for using the product? Doubtful, but at least we'll stop the typical drafts. I'll update the review in the spring after it goes through a season.
