Overall, I achieved better results (and less messy!) using a blanket covering the opening. Perhaps it's just my fireplace shape, but there is no significant improvement in draft stoppage. In the end, I'm still using the same old external cover to minimize downdrafts. The telescoping stick is too short for big fireplaces & the pillow fit is poor, plus it shifts if you have serious downdrafts. I will likely end up getting a new damper installed & the cost of this would have been better applied to that. Plus to remove it to actually make a fire is messy & a pain to get it back in place again. Save your money or get more creative with Home Depot materials & make one yourself.Customer Review: Good but not perfect

I recently got and installed this in our chimney. It worked pretty well, but didn't perfectly seal around the flu handle and the edges. I ended up stuffing grocery bags in any spot that wasn't perfectly sealed and that seemed to do the trick.
Also note that in my case I thought the main culprit for heat loss was air escaping up through my chimney, but it turned out that it was a poorly sealed fresh air intake in the floor of my fireplace that was pouring the cold air into my basement. So stuffing that with some insulation and using aluminum duct tape made a bigger difference then this did. And that cost me a total of <$1.

So I've lived in my house for about 10 years and have always noticed that my living room is drafty. The house was built in '29 and the chimney doesn't have a flue. So I recently ordered some double pained windows thinking that that might help with the problem (and those were around $5k installed), and then I realized that it was really drafty by the fireplace. So I ordered this thing thinking it might help.
And...it seriously does! Wow, I feel like my house stays about 5 degrees warmer in the winter! Wish I had bought this BEFORE I ordered my new windows.

We bought this item about three weeks ago and it arrived just as our state was hit with frozen, windy weather. After 1 week, it needed readjusting, but we haven't had to touch it since. There is a noticeable difference in the temperature in my family room. I have a large masonry fireplace which I pre-measured ahead of time. This plug was a perfect fit. Certainly it would not work well in anything smaller. It fit well just below my damper and I didn't have to cut a hole for the damper handle. I would highly recommend this product, just advise to measure first!Customer Review: Disappointment over sealing

I had high hopes for the chimney sealer but after much time messing with it, it will not completely seal the chimney. It's a normal brick chimney and I cut the slot in the pillow to get it over the damper lever. When inflated, it doesn't seal the corners and the cold air comes in. I called the company and they won't take it back as I cut the slot in it. The directions could be better and more complete. All in all-too much for to little. Don't bother getting one of these. A sealed glass door for the fireplace costs more but will do the job much better.
