Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bayco SL-800 30-Foot Cord ReelCustomer Review: Good initially, but useless after a few months. Summary: 1 Stars
About 90 days ago I was happy to find what looked to be a reasonably well made retractable extension cord at a decent price in the Bayco SL-800. I'm glad I didn't post a review in the first few days or weeks because I would have given it a thumbs up for sure, but a little time has passed, it has been used on an almost daily basis in my workshop, I now I have to yank it and get a better one. To sum it up:
- The ring in the photo, I'm not sure what's going on there, it does not include, nor is the bracket equipped to handle any sort of an eyebolt as pictured. The "keychain-like" ring that reviewer J. Peterman refers to the safety pull out for the cotter pin. It's diminutive gauge is pretty standard for that function.
- The leader cord that you plug in to your outlet could be a little longer, it is truly only 12-18" long at the most.
- The reel includes screws to screw the bracket to a joist or stud (can be mounted vertically or horizontally [as pictured]) but in both my opinion and in actual experience using it, I'd strongly recommend bolts instead. You can get some inexpensively at a hardware store so you can bolt it right through a joist or stud. The repetitive stress of pulling the cord down to use it and doing a quick pull to get it to retract pulled out the screws in a matter of weeks, this stress is aggravated if you pull the cord down at anything other than a straight downward angle to the reel. Using bolts/locknuts/washers I've had no problems.
- *Biggest deal breaker* With right about 75-90 days of usage the outlets themselves in the cord have almost no retention left in them. That is to say when you plug your drill in, there is little to no frictional force holding that plug in place. I've really only ever had this happen on very old and/or abused surge suppressors that were of questionable quality to start with anyway. So basically it's of no use to me now, I plug a tool in and if the plug should as much as rotate it will fall out immediately.
I bought this at either HD or Lowes, forget which one, but will probably try to return it and try a different brand.
