Tools and Hardware Reviews of Mayfair 148E2 Slow Close Wood Elongated Toilet Seat with Lift Off Hinge, WhiteCustomer Review: Nicely built, well functioning lid. Summary: 5 Stars
Our elongated bowl came with a plastic split seat that looked horrendous in a home bathroom. We replaced it for a couple yeras with one of those cheap foam seats that are soft, which worked fine for a while, until it got visibly dirty, despite regular bleaching.
I looked for an affordable replacement seat, and saw this model. After using this product for a few months. I highly recommend it. It is built well, and feels very solid in construction. There is no give at the hinges like other cheap seats. The hinges works very well as well. During the first month or two the hinges were very stiff, and the lid took a full minute to close. However, the lid is finally broken ain and the lid closes in about 15 seconds in a nice smooth motion, with barely an audible noise when it finally taps down on the bowl. Impressive.
The only complaint i have is that the bolts that are used are plastic, like many other cheap seats, but because the seat itself has no flex, they have been holding up perfectly so far.
As long as the finish on this seat holds up to time, this product will have my high recommendation. Oh and by the way, the seat is comfortable to sit on.
It is a little harder to find good seat replacements for elongated bowls for the home setting, but I recommend that people give this seat a try.
The finish is very white, not an ivory, but very close to the white that reminds me of the white from those Liquid White Out bottles we used to use to cover pen ink while writing on looseleaf paper back in school.
Customer Review: It really is quiet Summary: 4 Stars
I bought one elongated toilet seat and one round recently; and today, I'm back to buy another round seat
The Mayfair slow close seats are great. My husband installed them easily, and he's not the handyman type.
When I bought the seat, I wondered if it was only the seat that lowered slowly or if it was also the lid. Well, it's both. I love it. It's whisper quiet; but if I need to close it quickly, I can push it down to hurry it up.
The entire seat does come off for cleaning, but I find it takes a bit of a push to turn the knob and pull it off. I put it back easily, though. I think I'll just leave it on like a regular seat unless it needs serious cleaning.
PROS:
+ easy installation
+ toilet seat and lid close slowly and quietly
+ attractive
+ seat comes off for cleaning
CONS:
- takes a little push to take the toilet seat off.
UPDATE: Just wanted to add that when I bought the elongated seat, I thought one of my toilets was elongated when it was not. It just had a larger toilet seat on top than another round toilet in my house. Make sure you buy the correctly shaped seat.
Luckily, I also have an elongated toilet, and this seat fits the elongated toilet perfectly.
Customer Review: Best seat for two boys Summary: 5 Stars
My pre-teen boys share a bathroom. They have been through four (yes, four) seats in six years. Granted, one was a SpongeBob novelty seat that wasn't built for the long haul. Still, one expects toilet seats to be able to last more than a year or so. Yes, the boys do slam the seat down often and with more force than needed. Yes, I've caught them dancing on the seats, and once I caught the youngest one jumping off it. But now that they're a little older and less likely to dance on the toilet, this seat is holding up very well. It has a nice, slow close. It doesn't slam. It's easy to put on and take off for cleaning. The hinges are designed and manufactured well. Goodbye "wobbly" seats that would continue to wobble even with plumbing tape. Now I don't have to be embarrassed when people stay over. I like it so much, I ordered it for the main bathroom, where yet another toilet seat has cracked. Sigh.
Customer Review: What a great lid! Summary: 5 Stars
I started looking for a new lid when I purchased my new AquaSource stool, knowing ahead of time that the furnished lid was not going to work, even though the stool itself had a very high rating. And, the reviews were right. It was pretty cheap plastic. So I started checking for lids and wanted solid, good looking, and slow-closing. I first thought maybe Kohler, but the reviews weren't very good, and then I saw the reviews for the Mayfair 148E2 and decided to get it. It arrived yesterday, and I was amazed at how easy it was to install. It is very solid and the finish is perfect. I'm pretty handy around the house, but anyone can put this on their stool if they can read the short instructions. I'm not sure about the "slight bottoms" critique since I don't have one, but for most people I think they will find this an exceptional buy and highly recommend it.
Customer Review: Nice! Summary: 5 Stars
To start off, wood seats are heavier and solid feeling, whereas plastic seats will have a bit of give. This one is wood.
The seating is convex (meaning it's slightly raised as opposed to how some are tapered inwards), and has the slow close feature. No more seat slam! While I haven't had it long enough to comment on its durability, the finish quality is good. It is made in the USA.
The slow-close mechanism is contained within the hinges, so nothing really detracts from its looks. The quick-release mount is nice - a little tricky when attaching, but it beats having to squish your fingers to clean that cranny where gunk builds up all the time. Both the slow close and the quick release adds to the price, so yes, these do cost a bit more than your regular toilet seat, but it's worth it.
