Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bench Dog 40-011 Feather-Loc Double Featherboard for Table Saws & Router Tables

Customer Review: Easy, Effective, and Convenient
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a total of four Bench-Dog featherboards, two with the 10-012 miter-slot adapter. The 40-011 boards come with square-head bolts that slip into slots in B-Dog's router table's fence and hold the workpiece down to the table and into slots in the router table to hold the workpiece against the fence.
If you purchase the featherboards with the 40-012 miter-slot adapter they're easy to use in the table-saw miter slot of most saws. The 40-012 adapter uses a taper-headed screw to wedge the slider in the slot. I did have trouble keeping the featherboard from moving unless I over-tightened the knob. I sprayed graphite on the screw taper and this solved the problem.

I bought the two-pack for use with the Bench-Dog table-saw extension router table. I found that for best results, I needed two on the infeed side and two on the outfeed and quickly bought two more.

Customer Review: Bench Dog Featherboard
Summary: 2 Stars

Take these back to the drawing board Bench Dog!
Let me start by saying I love my Bench Dog router plate, but these featherboards are way too stiff. You usually can't even force the material past the featherboards. Back off slightly, and they offer no contact at all. I have used cheap plastic featherboards before, and really liked them. These are way too stiff. Every so often I take them to the band saw and cut off another plastic finger - still too stiff.
Also the non-parallel slots are not well designed. This is minor compared with the stiff fingers.
Two things I do like about these...
1. They are plenty long, so they reach the router fence in any position.

2. They indicate feed direction, so when your brother in law borrows your router table he won't hurt himself.

Try another brand, these aren't any good.

Customer Review: Buy another featherboard that has two hold downs in parallel slots!!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

These featherboards looked good so I bought. In use they are hard to adjust because the slots are not parallel and the bolts bind. Because the slots get closer as you move the fingers closer to the blade, the featherboard has more leverage on it and is not that stable. They should have kept the slots parallel

Also, featherboards only work when the fingertips are parallel to the fence and these are hard to adjust.

The other problem is only one of the bolt knobs actually cause the miter track to expand to hold the featherboard in!! This is the biggest problem. The other bolt only pulls the orange plastic down to the track but does not expand in the slot. So there is always some rotational play in the featherboard.

The bottom line is-- this is an expensive featherboard with two insurmontable problems, so keep looking.

Customer Review: useful when third hand not availbe
Summary: 5 Stars

Sometimes a piece is critical when it comes to the cut. The feather-lock keeps you piece secure against the fence as promised. I use this both for table and router saws. It leaves both hand available for feeding the piece. That way you can not only guide the piece better, but you can continuously feed it in order to avoid burning the wood (it matters when you expect to have an exposed edge but don't really need to plane it and also when you need the surface unburnished in order for glues to hold properly). For a lot of table saw work, the bench dog is overkill and is a loss of time.

Make sure to double check that the lock will hold. Sometimes it can seem to have locked correctly and then it'll slip when the pieces are fed through the saw. Took me a little while to get used to. I don't have that problem anymore.

Customer Review: Great Router Table Featherboard
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a bit sceptical about getting these based on some other reviews..but I decided to buy them anyway, and am I glad I did.

I was expecting some cheap plastic featherlocks like another set I had...these seem far from cheap. Very rigid frame, mounts easily to my miter track. These just work well..so well that I ordered a second set.

I do not find the angled slots for the hold down to be troublesome at all like other reviewers mentioned. They adjust easily and quickly.

I also found that you you mount these in reverse (feather away from bit) that you can also use these as a stop block...very handy!

These work very well for a router table, if you want to use something with a tablesaw, I would highly recommend the "Mesa Vista Design GRIP-TITE Magnetic Table Saw Featherboard"
