Tools and Hardware Reviews of Bird-X YG Yard Gard Ultrasonic Animal Repeller

Customer Review: Probably Works
Summary: 4 Stars

It definitely 'works'...I can't hear it, but my children sure can. They complain about it no matter what frequency I set it to. Fortunately, they sleep on the other side of the house. If you want something to keep pesky teens away...this is for you!! I'm 'guessing' it works for its intended purpose because I haven't seen the mink I bought it to repel. When I put big juicy fish back in the pond, we'll know for sure.

The instructions are well written and make it clear that your defense system against critters should involve multiple elements. That's very responsible. I love the long power cord.

There's an odd comment in the instructions that says if the red indicator light burns out, you can't simply replace the bulb; you must replace the unit. I'd hate to replace something because of a burned out bulb! If the bulb is really an LED and pretty much immortal and the fact that it doesn't light really means the circuits in the unit have fried and, therefore, the unit must be replaced, it'd make more sense. (Long/complex sentence, I know.)

Customer Review: Wayyy too expensive.... Wayyyy too ineffective
Summary: 2 Stars

If you're looking to keep yard animals (rabbits, squirrels, even rats) away from your flowers and garden...this is only effective if you can plug it in to an AC outlet and leave it plugged in. And since it does not send the sound through walls, it is necessary to place it outdoors and leave it plugged in if you want the signal to be always on... and believe me... you do. It does work on 4 C batteries, but does not allow you to set it so that it is always on. (Even if you could, it would run the batteries down, anyway). So, what you get is a motion detector. If it senses the moving of an animal it will come on. If the animal stops... it will go off. And, don't think that besides it having a limited half-circle range... that the animals don't figure it out. All in all... It just does not work! And at more than $60.00 including shipping... it's not even close to being a good value. P.S. For those of you who are able to plug it in and leave it plugged in outdoors... don't forget to go out and turn it back on and reset it if you have a brown-out. v

Customer Review: Works but....
Summary: 3 Stars

So far I find that this is keeping raccoons away.. Two nights I didn't have it out and they dug around my yard looking for grubs. If it is out that doesn't happen and they haven't stolen any more tomatoes. So, it works and seems to work well.

My complaint and the ONLY reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 is that the on and off switch and all adjustments and batteries are inside the back cover which is a soft type plastic that fits over the housing. In order to mount this on a wall one has to mount with the holes in the back cover. PROBLEM is the back cover does not go back on the unit tightly. It is really difficult to get it on even half way and not enough to hang it off a wall. So if I want to turn the unit off and on (which I would like to do to save batteries during the day) I would have to fight that back cover.

I was ready to return both units I bought but due to the fact that it works so well I have managed to sit it on a box and get the cover on the top good so no moisture gets in...

Customer Review: Equivocal thumbs up
Summary: 3 Stars

We've had the YardGard for about a month. Since then there's been only one successful Raccoon sortie, and that one was quite destructive--the little bandits harrowed the flowerbed directly in front of the YardGard. This is certainly an improvement over nightly incidents.

However, it's hard to know how much credit to assign to the YardGard. We also have a CriterGetter motion detector. It produces an loud shriek that wakes up the half neighborhood. When it comes to politics, my neighors come from a different planet. When it comes to raccons; we're a botherhood. When the CritterGetter goes off, several sleepy-eyed neighbors pour out of their houses with BB guns or head for the water hoses. In effect, this neigborhood militia makes the the CritterGetter/Yard Guard combo much more effective. The war of attrition continues.

Bottom line...
I'm not sure if the YardGuard works. I'm also not sure that it doesn't work. It's not a sure thing. For the time being, I'm optimistic, but skeptical.

Customer Review: Miracle In a Little Green Box
Summary: 5 Stars

I had such a problem with raccoons pooping in my fountain that I couldn't even enjoy my new backyard because I was cleaning the fountain every single day. Cheyenne pepper does work but you have to keep re-applying every day and if you miss a day, watch out. More poop, which smells really bad!!

I went online to check out how to repel raccoons and found all kinds of gadgets out there. Some of them are very questionable and with high price tags. I had heard of electronic sound devices, so thought I would check some of these out. One of these was the Bird-X Yard Gard Ultrasonic Animal Repeller. After reading the product description I thought, "Wow, I wonder if this really works." After reading reviews on this product and finding that everyone had good luck with it repelling raccoons I decided to give it a try.

Believe me, THIS THING REALLY DOES WORK!!! I have not had any more problems with any raccoons and am enjoying my back yard.
