Tools and Hardware Reviews of BISSELL Cleanview Helix Upright Vacuum Cleaner, Bagless, 82H1Customer Review: Good product, great value! Summary: 5 Stars
Overall:
I'd have to say, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!
A bit of context:
I'm using this in a 900 sqft apartment, with high-pile/nearly-shag carpet (not by choice), with two small dogs (neither can be considered 'shedders'). I was amazed and the amount of debris this machine picked up. The cardigan that remained in the canister after a not-so-thorough test run exceeded all of my expectations; the vac even picked up old carpet cleaner powder left behind using the previous vacuum. I've used it a few times now, and suction remains excellent--I empty the canister regularly, and check/clean the filters after each use. Previously I've always had bagged vacuums, and the few experiences I've used bagless vacuums I wasn't thrilled with. Mind you this review may be a bit biased--this vacuum replaced my fiances 15 year old Hoover (which goes to say something about Hoovers). Initially I was looking exclusively at Hoovers; but I saw this gem for roughly $20 less than the base-model Hoovers on Amazon.
Turbo Brush:
I really wasn't expecting much from the Turbo Brush; it looks like a cheap/toy-like add-on, but for bathroom rugs and upholstery it's fantastic. The suction was surprisingly strong, to the point where edges of the bath rugs had to be held down. When using with high-pile bath rugs the tool can suck too much of the pile into brush resulting in a stoppage of rotation (but I find this to be normal with any brush attachment), this had me wishing the brush was independently-driven as opposed to suction-powered. The folks at Bissell apparently do their R&D though--after some thought I realized that if the brush had had it's own motor, over-suction of pile would probably tax it, and render it useless pretty quickly. The fact that the brush is suction-powered means that if it does get a bit too much to eat, the drum stops, and no damage is done.
Cleaning of the unit:
Easy to empty canister and filters (all of which are washable--including the teal 'Helix' in the upper canister--with the exception of the HEPA on the side of the unit). The body of the vacuum behind the canisters can be a bear to clean due to it's nooks and crannies; and after picking up all of that old carpet-cleaning powder, there was a light dusting behind the canisters. The foam filters are easily washed, and appeared to do their job (caked with old carpet powder).
Pros:
-Cord-clip/holder on handle
-Headlight (illumination was just right)
-Easy canister access/cleaning
-Turbo Brush
-Relatively lightweight
-'Low-cleaning mode' (a surprise feature to me!) No more lifting of the leading edge when trying to get under the couch. Simply depress the foot control one more time, and the handle can drop straight to the floor.
-Varying carpet depth settings
Neutral:
-Decent cord length, but may be a bit short for large homes/open floor plans
-Not a 'silent' model, but the overall operational noise was just fine--no surprises
-Turbo brush may not be able to be cleaned (I left mine be after realizing that it'd be a pain to dry out after washing)
Cons:
-A bit difficult to clean the interior of the vacuum body (behind the canisters)
-I wouldn't recommend the use of carpet powders (maybe once in a while, but I wouldn't want to clean the foam filters and vac interior every time I use it)
-Extendable hose is great for reaching upward (or for corner cleaning with the provided extension tube), but you can easily pull the vacuum over if trying to clean directly from the hose (no extension).
Again, this is my first time owning a bagless, so all these 'amazing' features might be the status-quo nowadays; but for me I certinaly hope this unit will last for years to come. I preferred the Hoover's looks and design, but given the price-point of this Bissell, I doubt I'll have any regrets. If this review hasn't been updated the vacuum is still going strong!
