Customer Review: A great little machine

With six cats in the house, there's sometimes a little problem of pet odor, whether from accidents, upchucks, or one of the cats deciding that a folded towel on the couch is a great litter box substitute. We needed an upholstery cleaner and carpet spot cleaner. After some looking around, I decided to try the Little Green machine.
The instructions were easy to follow, and the machine is simple to use. Cleaning solution goes in one tank. The hose has a scrubber head with a spray trigger that sprays the solution, then suctions the solution out of the fabric. The used solution is drawn out of the upholstery and goes into the second tank, which is easy to empty and rinse.
The spray device works best for surface cleaning. For the kind of deep cleaning I needed on the couch, I used a cloth and a bucket of vinegar and water to saturate the upholstery, then used the Little Green machine as a wet vac to suction the solution back up. Several applications did the trick.
The small nozzle makes the LIttle Green machine useful for furniture and for spot-cleaning carpets. It's not a substitute for a larger steam cleaner for cleaning an entire carpet.

I often rely on customer product reviews for many items that I purchase so I wanted to leave feedback on this item because I am so happy with it. I have cats that often leave spots on the carpet (rarely the bare floor!). Whenever I use a bottled carpet cleaner it seems the spot will come up but then some time later a dark discoloration will appear. I recently had my carpets professionally cleaned which did remove all the dark spots. I was told that these spots were from detergent residue left after spot cleaning that would then attract dirt. The cleaning company actually recommended the Bissell machine. It works so well. I do leave it set up with water and cleaning solution as the instructions say that you can so that it is ready to go. I can clean a spot and rinse the machine out in minutes. Since I leave it set up I'm using cool water and it still cleans well. Some customers said that the sprayer was too wide but I find it's fine if you angle it down closer to the carpet. Doesn't overspray that way. I was ready to rip out my carpeting until having it professionally cleaned and now the Bissell machine will help me keep it that way. We have been using this type of cleaner for more than 10 years and the type of cleaner in general is very useful invention. When we bought this, we were expecting some design improvement over our 10 year old one. But like many products nowadays, design for the look changed a lot, not for the functionality.
This type of cleaner tends to deal with all kind of dirty situation and if you see narrow plastic gaps under the liquid container, difficult to clean, you probably do not even want to try to clean after a few years. The clear container looks clean now. But only way of cleaning inside is to put liquid and just shake, and the container has lot of plastic structure and pipe inside, I could easily see it having all kind of unpleasant colors appearing soon or later.
And with such bulky size, and only a small container, you would probably be busy discharging and refilling the tanks looking for new solution in the middle of accident on your carpet. Having raised two children and living with two dogs now, I feel that I would rather look for potentially better designed one than buying this at this point.

I purchased The Little Green Machine, model #1400-5 a few years ago & I keep it handy (with solution in it) just in case our dog has an accident or one of our clumsy guests spills something. When this happens I grab some paper towels to soak up most of the spill & then I plug in "Little Green" to clean out the rest of the residue. This immediate action has helped to save our carpet from permanent stains on many occasions. I cleaned carpets for a living many years ago & I can tell you that once a stain has dried, it's alomost impossible to remove. Keep this machine on hand & your clumsy friends will be a little less embarassed. I have a regular carpet cleaning machine that I use for general cleaning but I still use the little one to clean the steps (it's easier).
Last year I had a problem with the pump but managed to find one on line ($15.00) & was able to replace it myself. This gave me a chance to clean the unit thoroughly & make it look like new while I had it apart. I'll keep it in good working order as long as I can. I love this machine.

Received, unpacked, tried and returned this particular Bissell product all within a 24-hour period. The cleaning solution sprayed everywhere within a 3-foot diameter but on the desired area. The scrub brush attachment is like using a toothbrush. The vacuum portion to extract the solution and dirt out of the cleaned area is worthless. Not one drop was vacuumed into the dirty water tank. You just know you have now soaked your cleaned area with approximately one gallon of liquid and can't get it out. Only when I used my trusty little ShopVac 1-gallon wet/dry vac, which cost me $20.00, was I able to extract any of the solution from the cleaned area. So save some money, buy the 1-gallon wet/dry vac, one stiff brush and some dry foam cleaner (Prestone upholstery cleaner is my fav), all for around $25.00, and you've got superior results to this Bissell machine at $74.00. Additionally, Bissell Customer Service is worthless; they only tell you to contact the merchandiser from whom you bought their machine. Bissell has made my "they don't get my money" list.
