Tools and Hardware Reviews of BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum, Corded, 33A1

Customer Review: Meh.
Summary: 2 Stars

Based on the glowing reviews here and the pictures (and the price), I bought this cute little vacuum. I come home to a multiple pet household, where all my clothes are thoughtfully (and thoroughly) festooned with fur before I need to go out again. I definitely need something that will remove the fur before PETA comes after me.

Until now, my only workable options for dealing with pet hair have been 1) picking out the hairs by hand 2) rubbing the fabric lightly with masking tape 3) using a directional pet brush, 4) dry clean everything twice a week and 5) buy new clothes and then never come home again. So far I have found the use of flamethrowers on fur-infested clothing satisfying in the short term, but ineffective in the long term. Yes, we regularly bathe and brush the happy little beasts, but annoyingly, that process only seems to speed up the transfer of fur from animal to clothing. There's got to be a better way.

Would the Bissell stand up to the challenge? Let's go down to the lab to find out.

Right off, upon opening the box, we see a problem. No crevice tool, no hose. Well, who doesn't have crevices they need to get fur out of? Well, besides people who don't own pets. And no hose means my hands are dangerously close to claws. We're not off to a promising start, but let's plug this baby in and start her up.

Hmmn. Plenty of power! Very nice. The air being shot out the sides is warm. You folks in Michigan and other places that are cold in the winter, take note. Your days of shovelling snow are over; just vacuum your pet in the driveway.

Experiment number one: vacuum the Pomeranian. Surely this should result in one bald little dog (thus ending the shedding problem). Before you give me that appalled look, the dog has three sweaters, plus a raincoat, a "Vote 2008! tshirt and a devil costume, so it's not like he's going to get cold. C'mere, doggy!

Result: no fur was removed in the making of this review. However, the air from the sides managed to blow hair from somewhere onto my black turtleneck (the uniform of all mad vacuum reviewers). Dog and vacuum cleaner 1, reviewer 0.

Experiment number 2: my black turtleneck. Here the Bissell performed quite well, except that I'd get one area perfectly clean, move on to another, and find the first area covered in fur again. Looking down, I see the problem: the Pomeranian is scratching himself at my feet, sending clouds of fur flying. I can't fault the Bissell on that one. Dog and vacuum cleaner 2, reviewer 0.

Experiment number three: The Evil Killer Fleece. No vacuum has ever bested the Evil Killer Fleece. To even the playing field, I shut all the animals out of the lab, and clean it up thoroughly with a lesser upright vacuum that has a crevice tool.

The Evil Killer Fleece is a black fleece jacket from the Observatory at Mauna Kea gift shop. It was a lovely thing when my sister first bought it for me. Now it looks like a filthy, mangy, molting Wookie. What makes it an Evil Killer Fleece? One, it's black, so very little of the fur around here blends in. Also, whatever fur or hair is in the room not only flies directly to this thing (I think it's an electrostatic charge, or perhaps evil things just like to stick together), but gets woven deeply into the very fabric of the fleece, if not time and space itself. I've picked fur off, only to see it float for a moment, then zip right back to the jacket. This thing does not want to give up whatever has come into its clutches. Now, I could just throw it out, and believe me, I have. But I have a spouse who picks it out and takes it to the dry cleaner, from whence it returns sparkly clean, having corroded a little more money from my bank account. He loves the thing. A week later, we're back to the Wookie look. I admit, though, the Mauna Kea Observatory patch is pretty keen.

Let's start vacuuming, shall we?

...

Bad news, duckies. A half hour of vacuuming cleaned one side of one shoulder of the Evil Killer Fleece. Worse, my hand is raw and bleeding. Why?

As noted by others here, this little sucker is a bit heavy for its size, which probably explains its power. But the handle is not well balanced, nor is it contoured; as your hand tires, it's hard to control side to side movement. It's just a slick plastic tube. But the bloody part comes from the sharp plastic seam that runs along the top of the vacuum, and the upper and lower sides of the handle. With all the wobble and the weight, my palms and knuckles rubbed against these seams. I didn't notice I'd been actually cut until, well, I got cut. To add insult to injury, the Bissell really struggled to wrest the fur from the jacket's clutches. It took repeated passes and much rubbing. The soft, cute little rubber nose did help lift some fur up, but I didn't get that "wow!" experience, no beautiful expanse of furless fleece left behind after a single swipe. I stopped when I not only realized I was bleeding, but that I'd wasted a perfectly good half hour *vacuuming*.

So the Fleece stands undefeated. I am returning the Bissell (after a bit of clean-up). Does this mean you shouldn't get it? Others here seem to manage to use it successfully without needing a hand transplant. I suspect these are the kind of people who can correctly assemble a Death Ray from a kit and have it work first time. You know who you are. You don't even have a laboratory and you can do this.

To be fair, I didn't try the Bissell on furniture. I have given up on fabric furniture, and now stick to the "distressed leather" look. A crevice tool is essential for getting fur out from between the cushions. I also didn't try it in the car, again, the lack of a hose and a crevice tool pretty much scotches that for me. Also, I didn't mention about the dog vacuuming experiment, that it left the dog's fur sticking out at odd angles. Hilarious for me and the dog seemed to enjoy it, but a regular vac will do the same thing. The noise thing that people have reported; it's quieter than the shop vac. I'd say it's about the same as the electron microscope.

So I give it a "Meh" rating. It might work very well for you. I'll keep looking.
