Tools and Hardware Reviews of BISSELL ProHeat 2X Select Pet Upright Deep Cleaner, 94003

Customer Review: High hopes, great performance...then disappointment
Summary: 3 Stars

Did tons of research. Disregarded reports of sprayer "not working" after a few months of storage as poor care of unit. My apologies to those folks.

This unit did exactly what I needed--freshen up carpet and clean spots from foot traffic and 100 lb dog. I've had it about a year and used it around 6 times. I meticulously clean it EVERY time including running the "clean water" cycle through floor sprayer to clear the lines prior to storage.

Got it out today and...imagine this...couldn't get the floor sprayer to work! I did NOT remove and flush hoses. Instead, I noticed that the soap compartment wouldn't seat properly; thus, the seal was not holding and the pump was losing its prime. I could turn off the machine, turn it back on, and get both clean water and soap to spray...for about 30 seconds. On closer inspection, the compartment which holds the soap was cock-eyed. I got to looking in there, and it appears that part of the gasket within the machine is fused to itself thereby not allowing the soap tank to seat properly.

I've ordered a new gasket for $4.99. I have no idea yet how difficult this will be to replace--I'm pretty good at following instructions from the net.

So, would I buy this unit again? Not sure. At the time of purchase, I didn't think I could find anything better--I couldn't be more pleased with how this thing perform(ed) when it works. However, this is a chunk of change to drop and then be faced with this headache when all you want to do is clean your carpet! I mean, I only purchased a carpet cleaner to avoid the inconvenience of running to the local hardware store to rent one. That function is lost with this problem. Yeah, I think I would look elsewhere if I had it to do over.

Customer Review: Works well until it doesn't work.

I've had my machine since October of 2008, and it worked very well in my household of 2 german shepherds, a cat, and a husband until December of 2010. It just randomly quit spraying one day. Given how much it costs, I expected it to last longer than a couple years. I had to drive 50 miles to the nearest service center (I live in Bakersfield, CA, so it's not like it's a tiny town - there should be one, at least!!).

The diagnosis is a clogged heater coil, which is very common from what I've found in online reviews and according to the repair guy. It's $75 to fix it and the strain placed on the pump from the slowly clogging heater coil means that the pump could go any time, too. That means another $70 and another hour and a half round trip to get that fixed, if the pump goes. I have taken great care of my machine, running clean water through it after every use and storing it without cleaner in it, despite what the manual says you can do.

Also - the little attachment with the spinning brushes is useless on this machine. I tried it a couple times and the second you put pressure on it, it stops spinning; if you don't put pressure, it doesn't work. I decided early on it was a gimmick tool.

I'm choosing not to repair mine, since I can get a less problematic and more powerful Hoover F5914 for $150. The Hoover has 12 amps that go directly to suction, rather than being split up so that half of the amperage goes to suction and the other half is diverted to gadgetry and the heater. You get faster-drying carpet that way! Plus, I don't want to end up spending $75 only to have the Bissell break again anyway. Shame on Bissell for making machines that break down so easily!

Customer Review: I LOVE this machine!

I've had this steam vac for over a year and a half now, and it's still going strong. I have 3 cats and a dog (one cat just turned 19 years old, the dog is 13, so accidents are going to happen). Let me start off by saying, I moved from an apartment in NY to a house in Pennsylvania. In NY, the costs were too high, and we had roaches. When we moved, the roach problem became pretty much a non issue. However, there were a few "leftovers" tagging along in our boxes. These quickly died out (thank God). My point though, is even though we have a vacuum that cost about a hundred dollars more than the steam vac (and died way too quickly, but when it was still working well), it still didn't get things that this steam vac did! Apparently some of the smaller "leftovers" died and were embedded in the rug, naked to the eye, and oblivious to the vacuum. But the first time I used this steam vac, it cleaned out a bunch of them! Some stains (especially cat hairball related) take a little work to get out, but the vacuum still gets them. The only thing this doesn't clean well is blood (the old cat has a growth on her abdomen that sometimes bleeds), but I'm so pleased with how well this works, and how easy it is to clean! (I haven't even opened it up like other reviewers have, just rinsed some of it with the sink sprayer and it still works fine. I probably will take off the clear plastic parts and do a good cleaning on it, but the fact is it's working beautifully a year and a half later, w/o doing that sort of maintenance. It even helps get up hair that the vacuum won't. It clumps them into lumps of hair that can easily be picked up by hand.

Customer Review: Did A Great Job!!

After doing a lot of research, I finally decided to buy the Bissell ProHeat 2x Select Pet Upright Deep Cleaner. We have four kids and three dogs, so our carpet gets heavy traffic. Two of the dogs are pups and are still being housetrained, so they are having accidents on the carpet. Assembly was easy, even though I had to call customer service to find out where the screws were. They were taped to the handle. I was looking in the box for the screws. After assembling I filled the bladder with water. Easy to take on and off, filled the seperate tank with cleaning solution and was ready to clean. I pretreated stains with the spot treatment stuff that came with the machine. Turned the machine on and cleaned as suggested, spray forward and backward motion. And then same motions without spraying. I cleaned slowly to ensure maximum cleaning. WOW! The stains disappeared. I cleaned the whole living room and emptied dirty water twice. Yes, it does leak a little on the forward spraying motion, but is sucked all up during the dry motions. I have used professional carpet cleaners and they also leaked the same way. In my opinion, the Bissell did as good as the professional equipment. Cleanup was easy. I emptied dirty water and remaining clean water out of bladder and then rinsed where the dirty water goes. I also, unscrewed the suction shield part and rinsed and used a toothpick to dig out carpet lint. I would recommend buying this machine

Customer Review: LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!

OMG I couldn't believe how well this worked.

Originally we were going to buy a new area rug for our family room. It was a few years old, had all kinds of "I don't know what" spot stains, grease stains from my dogs eatting bones, a big Red Wine stain from where my husband spilled a glass months ago, AND a couple of tar spots that got dragged in on shoes from when we repaired our roof. Oh yeah and it's a light beige color so when I say it was a mess I'm not lyin'.

I decided to look into a carpet cleaner before buying a new rug only because the cost of the rug would be about the same as buying a shampooer. I figured if I could get the carpet clean with a carpet cleaner then I could use the same amount of money and get all the carpet in my house clean.

I made such an awesome choice!

Love this machine. It got everything and I mean EVERYTHING out of the carpet including the tar stains.

I have nothing to compare this model to since I've never used a carpet cleaner before but the fact that it worked so well makes the need for comparison unnecesary for me.

Some people had issues with this machine, but not enough to deter me from trying it and I'm so glad I did.

I did move slowly to allow the machine to do it's job and then went over the rug with a clean water rinse.

I was definately not disappointed. To me this was money well spent.
