Tools and Hardware Reviews of BISSELL QuickSteamer Multi-Surface Upright Deep Cleaner, 2090Customer Review: Surprised Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered this from Amazon around Thanksgiving 2010 and I am just getting to use it. I used this cleaner to clean a 9x12 wool area rug I purchased from Pottery Barn 10 years ago. I know I am probably not supposed to clean this rug in this manner but I have two small dogs and dogs occasionally barf, chew on rawhide bones, have dirty feet and have potty accidents. I am also an avid gardener so there is probably lots of soil/dust present as well. The last time my carpet was professionally cleaned was 2006. Before I used this unit, I vacuumed the rug twice (in opposite directions). The rug has a beige, salmon, cream and sage paisley pattern on it. With this in mind, here's my review.
It was easy to take out of the box and assemble. There were two cleaning solutions came with it. One for hard surfaces and the other for fabric/carpet. The fabric cleaner is highly concentrated and it took just a few tablespoons in hot tap water to fill the tank. Because I didn't have a separate pre-treater, I used a very dilute solution of the cleaner on trouble areas prior to using the unit.
Putting the tank onto the unit is really easy, no spills occurred when turning the clean water tank upside down to insert into the unit. The one drawback is that the tank is really small; probably less than a gallon. Because I was cleaning an area rug this was not that big of a deal for me. It did take two tanks to cover the entire rug.
What I noticed most is that the cleaner is very small so it takes quite a while to cover small areas. Again not that big a deal since I am cleaning an area rug. At first I couldn't tell that the unit was working but then I realized that it takes a minute or so to get the solution through the machine before it actually hits the carpet. My biggest concern is that because your are putting down solution as you push the machine forward and then removing it when you pull the machine back towards you, that may not be enough time for any "cleaning" to take place. It helps to go slow with each pass. Also on the areas where the carpet is mostly sage and salmon I didn't readily notice any change. However, when I got to a beige area I could really see a difference. I also noticed as the machine was pulling up the solution that a lot of soil was coming up with it. After I emptied the first tank, I was very surprised at just how dirty the water was...Really, really dirty. After that first tank, I rinsed the tank thoroughly before setting up the clean water tank again. Kind of annoying but it was necessary.
The good thing is that the carpet does not get too saturated, so the carpet is almost completely dry after about 2 hours with a ceiling fan on above it. I am in Illinois and we had a rare 55 degree December day today so there was no heat to help with drying.
Because my carpet is pretty soiled I will probably do another clean, but this time with a pet stain solution instead of the fabric/carpet cleaner. I noticed a definite doggy odor as I cleaned the carpet, so use of a pet solution is really going to be necessary.
Overall?
-Very easy to assemble
-Cleaners come with it and are concentrated so with an area rug I won't need to purchase anything anytime soon.
-Cleaners smell really good, but not good at taking care of pet odors.
-Because the unit is lightweight it was easy to push and pull.
-The location of the cord is a bit annoying. I would have preferred that it on the back of the unit instead of the side. I spent too much time removing it from my path and at one point got a bit coiled up in it (what can I say I am a klutz).
-Dirty water tank was easy to remove and clean, but you must be careful not to spill dirty water during removal. There is a foam filter/open area on top and I managed to make a mess of this with the first emptying of the unit.
-Nozzle on the front of the machine comes off for easy cleaning. However, the area under the brush and rotating brush does not come off, so I had to remove wool fibers/soil from that area by hand. Very messy and will never be clean unless I can figure out a way to remove the brushes without damaging them of using a tool to wipe down the remainder of the fibers and soil.
-The directions that come with the machine are a bit general. Because I'd ordered this in November I'd forgotten the model number and couldn't tell which directions applied to me. Used commonsense to work through this with no problem.
-Unit is more quiet than I expected. My vacuum cleaner is much louder.
-Fast dry time.
-Definitely have to pre-treat heavily soiled areas prior to cleaning with unit.
-Price point was good. Even if I only get 3 to 4 cleans from the unit, it is still cheaper than having rug professionally cleaned.
-Not sure how this might affect the area rug. As stated earlier, this is not the recommended method for cleaning a wool area rug so I expect to see some damage to the backing on the rug. However, I do not see any damage or shrinkage of the rug. I did have a lot of fibers present in the unit after cleaning even though I vacuumed twice. My rug has been abused, have wasted black paint on it (successfully removed it), it's survived a couple of renovations (lots of dust) and I live with 3 dogs and small nieces & nephews so I definitely don't baby it, just vacuum it at least once a week.
-After looking at some of the rental units on the market and how dirty these units were, I decided that I did not want to introduce dirt from another household into my home. Never know where a stray bedbug may be hiding.
-If you're looking for a "steam" unit, this ain't it. You basically use hot tap water, but it seems to be effective.
-I will never use this unit as a cleaner for hard surfaces. Takes too much time to set up and empty. A mop would be more efficient for me.
Would I recommend it? Only if the cleaning square footage is small. For larger spaces I would probably go with something larger. But if you are on a budget and can handle the time required to use this machine in a larger setting, it is worth the money. This was very efficient for me.
