Customer Review: good, but there's room for improvement . . .

The Bissell 2080 is a dry vacuum with carpet cleaning capability, that delivers decent performance at a reasonable price. The vacuum does not have any provisions for a hose, or other attachments. While primarily designed for use on carpet, the unit is also a good performer on hard floors.
Covering dry vacuuming first, the suction area is a narrow slit about 1/8 inch wide, at the front edge of the cleaner. Because this is also a wet vacuum, having a narrow slit makes it easier to pickup water, but it also means that the vacuum can't pickup larger debris. There is no bag, and the dust and dirt collects in a large plastic tank at the base. There is a roller with circular rows of short bristles located behind the suction area. While it may pickup hair, the roller does not do much actual cleaning. More on this later.
Suction power is pretty good, however to maintain good suction, you need to keep your exhaust system clear. Air exhausts through a vent on the side of the dust collector tank. A filter keeps the dirt from flying out of the machine. This' filter' is a just triangular shaped piece of sponge, that needs to be cleaned frequently, because when it is clogged you will not have suction. Doing normal cleaning, you can easily have a half inch thick layer of gunk collect there in no time. The sponge filter probably won't last long, and unfortunately Bissell does not provide any spares with the machine, so I am looking for something I can use as a replacement when it goes. The filter is essential, because if you run the machine without it, you will be spraying out dirt and dust, or worse water. As a dry vacuum, because of the filter issue, the Bissell 2080 rates three stars.
Now for wet carpet cleaning. Not surprisingly, Bissell recommends only using Bissell brand cleaning products in their machines. There are several types cleaning solutions available, and a 16 ounce bottle of Bissell Fiber Cleansing advanced formula is included with the machine. Since we have a dog that lives indoors, I went with Bissell's Pet Stain and Odor advanced formula cleaning solution. For wet cleaning carpet, there is a reservoir for the cleaning solution mix that holds about 67 ounces. You add cleaning solution up to a line on the reservoir (about 3 ounces), and then fill the tank up with water to a second line (about 64 ounces). Although `quicksteamer' is part of the product's nomenclature, this is not a steam unit. The closest you can get to steam, is to use hot water to dilute the solution. A lever at the top of the handle, sprays the solution.
The unit does a good job of cleaning. You get a nice spread of solution, and the suction (assuming the exhaust path is clear) is quite powerful. There is no leakage from the tank, and judging by the black color of the solution, lots of dirt is typically removed. However much more dirt could be removed if the cleaner had a more effective roller brush to agitate the carpet, and release more particles. If the roller brush had more bristles, or much longer bristles, the results for wet cleaning would probably be improved. The lower level of performance means it may take additional treatments to get the results you want. That adds more time, and cost to the job. As a wet vacuum, although performance is good, it could be better, the Bissell 2080 rates four stars.
If you are careful, emptying the waste liquid into the toilet should be no problem. Typically, you will need to rinse out the waste tank a few times. For clearing the tank of dirt, just add water and rinse it out the same way. The key to peak performance, is keeping the air flow path as clean and clear as possible. Take care not to damage any of the rubber seals. If those fail, your machine may start to leak.
The Bissell 2080 is relatively inexpensive, and the free shipping from Amazon is a plus. For those with large areas to clean, be prepared to frequently clear the filter, fill the cleaner reservoir, and empty the waste tank. I do not have a large area, so for what it does, I am satisfied with the 2080's performance. Improving the roller bush could very easily be done, as could providing some replacement filters. Finding a replacement filter is a big issue that I have yet to resolve. While the 2080 is a good performer, there is room for improvement, and as the long term reliability of the unit is in question, my overall rating drops to three stars.
