Tools and Hardware Reviews of Woolite 850B Rug Stick Carpet & Rug CleanerCustomer Review: Worked great for the price! Summary: 5 Stars
After being bombarded nightly with rugstick commercials, I finally broke down and had to buy one. These commercials are on so frequently that even my 4 year old son recognized it and wanted one for his birthday so he could clean the rug! On to the review, I bought the rugstick at the local Wal-Mart for $13 and then used a $3.00 coupon so I paid a little over $10 for the rugstick and another $3.50 for a can of the Woolite Heavy Traffic. Yes, I was skeptical before buying and I really didn't expect it to work as well as the commercial glamorized, but let's be honest, what glamorized pitchman type product does work 100% as advertised?
Ready, set, scrub! I have a 10x25 light blue area rug in our living room that was cleaned maybe one time in 6 years with a steam cleaner. We have dogs that shed and have accidents on the rug and we have two children who have spilled or experimented with every element known to mankind on the rug. It was downright disgusting and I had enough. I followed the directions on the box and cleaned the carpet in 4x4 sections by pulling the stick towards me and the foam came out of all of the jets almost all of the time, but sometimes it bunched up. I scrubbed in four different directions and I must say the rugstick made the carpet look almost brand new! No kidding, the color came back, 90% of the soil and dirt was gone and the carpet was fluffy again and it smelled really nice. I used up the 9 oz trial cleaner can and almost all of the 22 oz cleaner can for a 10x25 rug too.
The stick was well worth the $13 investment I made as it did make the carpet look 100% better and come on, it was $13 dollars for the stick and a 22oz can of the cleaner. There are only a few gripes that I had with the product.
Did it lift up every stain?
No but I didn't expect it would.
Was it hard to use?
Honestly I did have to scrub pretty hard and you have to do it in the four different directions recommended to get the best results, I am 6'3 and I could have used another foot extension in the stick as I had to bend over a bit too.
Was the product well made?
I scrubbed pretty hard and at times I felt it wise to hold the stick lower down as it is very lightweight metal that could definitely bend if pushed too hard. The foam occasionally bunched up in the jets, but I just tapped it on the ground and all was well.
Overall though, I would definitely recommend this product as I am very satisfied with the results!
Customer Review: Cool little tool for emergency little cleanups Summary: 4 Stars
I've had a small portable electric rug cleaner for years (a couple of Bissell Green Clean Machines and a little Hoover model) and all have eventually died a slow painful death at the hands of my cat and her hair, despite judicious vaccuuming. So I gave up on spot cleaning and resolved to just leave it to my big old Hoover steam cleaner.
When I saw the ad on television for this, I thought it was way too good to be true. And it really is. It does not give you sparkling clean carpets that look as lovely as the day they were installed and I'm sure even if my carpets were white, they would not be the beautiful white again just using the Rug Stick. But this did a really.. okay job cleaning up about a 5' by 3' traffic area that was bugging me. It freshened up the nap quite nicely and I do think that it brightened the color back up, so I'd say it cleaned at least half the grime out of it.
The cons - there were spots it did not even come close to getting out that its "deep clean" claim should have covered. I ended up using a few sprays of my absolute go-to favorite stain cleaner, Resolve Spot Remover, then going over it again with the Rug Stick, and all was well. But cleaning it twice defeated the purpose. The foam also was hard to control, although it may have been my wacky can. One minute it was putting out nice even lines, the next I was shooting foam all over.
The pluses - Nice smell that carries. My living room smelled great all day and I just did a small area. The scrubbing brush is really firm and doesn't seem prone to splitting, at least after the workout I gave it. The head itself is easy to clean up and it's slim enough that it's easy to store. It's simple to assemble, simple to use even without much of any instructions.
Overall, it's expensive for something that only really should be applicable for small areas, but works as a niche product. I can't believe anyone would use this on a whole rug, and for spot cleaning, I'd definitely go with the Resolve or something similar because this really doesn't have spot cleaning power. But for perking up and generally giving a traffic area a mini facelift, I think this is a pretty good buy.
Customer Review: A total joke. Summary: 1 Stars
I'm on a roll of reviewing all these bad products we've bought over the past couple of years. This is one of the worst of them all. The TV commercial for the rug stick makes it seem like it's so simple to use and so efficient. We didn't really expect that, we're not stupid, but we didn't expect it to be this bad.
First off, the price is pretty high for such a cheaply made product. The construction of the stick is very shoddy and though it can stand up to pressure, it feels like it's going to snap at any moment. The bristles get easily clogged from the combination of the foam and carpet fibers when you get to rubbing it and when you push down to dispense the foam it again feels like it's going to snap in half as the metal begins to bow. In fact, after a few uses, the dang thing did in fact bend. Feels like they made it out of cheap, melted down scrap metal from China.
Second, the foam comes out fairly evenly, though it takes some pushing on the stick, but it's not nearly enough to cover a big area. If you're using this for an area rug, fine I guess, but you'll need probably three containers of the foam to get a bigger area. At that price, you're better off renting a Rug Doctor and getting it done right.
Third, the product itself is a total joke. The foam rubs into the carpet just fine, but it doesn't absolutely nothing. We rubbed this stuff in our carpet several times and even bought another, full refill and tried it again. You'd probably have more luck rubbing in soap and water yourself. It definitely does not work as advertised and this idea that it "lifts dirt out" is a complete joke. Our carpet looked the same afterwards, maybe a bit lighter, but that was mainly because of the foam, until we swept it up and saw it did squat. We tried a Rug Doctor on it and there was a noticeable difference with only one sweep.
The Woolite rug stick is overall a horrible product. It doesn't do what it claims to do, it costs a lot, and it's very poorly constructed. There's a reason it wasn't easy for us to find in stores and why it's not advertised anymore. Get this thing off of the market now!
Customer Review: Rug Stick worked fine for me Summary: 4 Stars
I recently moved into a new apartment. As the heat and humidity have been increasing, odors from former pets have been sneaking out of the carpets. They were professionally cleaned before I moved in, so there were no stains to give away the location of the odors. I prefer carpet foam to carpet powder, and the foam that is made to go with the Rug Stick was the cheapest one at the store that mentioned odor removal. I bought a can, did a test patch, and noticed that the foam needed to be worked in to the carpet. I decided to get the Rug Stick rather than use a sponge. The Rug Stick was super easy to assemble, and while it is assembled of multiple thin metal rods, mine didn't seem any more flimsy than I expected a $14 (at WalMart) carpet cleaning stick to be. I don't think the Rug Stick should bend or break under normal use. It takes some elbow grease, and I still haven't felt like the Rug Stick is going to fall apart.
It took all of the 9 oz trial can as well as a full 22 oz can of the foam to do most of my bedroom carpet. My bedroom is large, but I still expected the foam to last a little longer. That's my only complaint. The foam smells really good. My carpet definitely looks refreshed, and the odor is gone. I can't comment on the stain removing abilities of this product, but it performed better than I expected at odor removal, which is why I bought it.
I'd suggest keeping in mind that this is a Rug "Stick" that you assemble yourself. I haven't seen the commercial that people have been referencing, but the whole assembly comes in a shoebox-sized package. I wouldn't expect any carpet stain removal miracles.
The real star for odor removal was the foam, but the Rug Stick made easier work of applying it.
Customer Review: Use it properly and it works! Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent product that works as advertised. I had a big brown coffee stain on my carpet that had been there for a few months. I tried using my handheld carpet cleaner but it didn't have much of an impact. I followed the directions on the rug stick and worked the stain from every angle. The rug stick removed it completely which then motivated me to go around the house cleaning every stain I could find. Stain after stain came up. It's a little bit of work but easier than hauling out your carpet cleaner.
A few things to note. This kit comes with a 9 oz. "trial size" of the heavy traffic cleaner. It was enough for me to clean about 6-7 stains so far but I would suggest also buying an extra can in the normal 22 oz. size Bissell #0820 22OZ Woolite Cleaner. Otherwise I would say the slight cons are that you need to rinse the rug stick off after use to remove fibers and pet hair and it's another long "broom-like" item that needs to be stored although you can disassemble it if you need to gain space.
In summary I would highly recommend this product, it makes stain removal quick and easy and if you're the type of person who gets really irked by carpet stains you will find this very handy.
