Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker PHV1800CB 18-Volt Pivoting-Nose Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

Customer Review: Heavy to hold, but worth the weight
Summary: 4 Stars

We got this Black & Decker handheld vacuum partially based on the good reviews here on Amazon. We've had it for 5 months and are very happy with it. It is easy to clean, has a sturdy construction, has a charger that takes up minimal floor space, has great battery life thus far, and most importantly in a vacuum, it really picks stuff up. Our upright vacuum died recently, and we're debating if we even need to replace it, because this handheld does such a great job. (Ours was $53.50, by the way, including shipping, but I'd say it's still worth it even if you have to pay a little more.)

This vacuum has only two drawbacks -- it is quite loud, especially on high (there's a low and a high setting), so late-night vacuuming in an apartment is out, and it's quite heavy for a handheld. In fact, my hand usually gets tired long before the battery runs out. If you have wrist, arm, or back trouble, you might need to look elsewhere. Otherwise, this is a great vacuum, and far and away the best handheld vacuum we've ever had.

P.S. Apparently there's a new model out. I haven't tried it out, but the reviews aren't quite as enthusiastic -- especially as they eliminated the charging station, which is one of this model's definite pluses. However, it's slightly lighter and the brush is built-in, so it's worth looking into, as well.

Customer Review: Exactly What I was Hoping For :-)
Summary: 5 Stars

For years I had an older model GE hand held vacuum that worked great. One of the features I loved about it was that it had a rotating brush, which made cleaning a breeze. When it broke down a couple of months ago I tried to have it fixed but it was too far gone and unfortunately no longer available to purchase. So I researched extensively on line and, because of the many rave reviews, decided on the Black and Decker. I have to say I was not disappointed. It is quite the powerful little vac! Honestly, it cleans as well as my old one - even without the brush. There are two filters, one inside the other, which you just twist, snap out, and shake right into the trash. They are washable but I haven't found the need to wash them yet as they clean up nicely just by tapping against the side of the trash can. The vac and charger conviently sit on my counter top so I can grab it quickly for messes and it does go about ten minutes on a single charge, as one reviewer wrote. I have two cats and absolutely LOVE the way it picks up the fur and cat dander, and I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to hand-held vacuums. I guess the only "negative" I have is that it's a little loud but really that doesn't bother me at all. This vac does it's job so well the noise is a non-issue.

Customer Review: Best "broken" dust buster I've ever had
Summary: 5 Stars

I like vacuuming; I find it cathartic. Which is why, after the 23 hour requisite charging period, I was very excited to use my new vacuum for the first time. I took it off the cradle and clicked it on, looking forward to removing some Cheerios my daughter kindly crushed into the carpet. And nothing. No sound, buzz, whir, light. Nothing. It was DOA. I charged it for another 2 days and still nothing. I was crestfallen.
So I called Black and Decker's help desk and spoke to an incredibly friendly and helpful rep. They agreed to send out a new vac free of charge since the nearest repair center was 50 miles away. A few days later, I decided to crack open the broken vacuum and see what would happen. I touched - something - and voila! It lived! I don't know what I did or what was wrong, but it's been working great ever since (about 1 month so far). It has a monster of a battery - I cleaned my mini van with it - and it sucks up things that you wouldn't think would fit, like grapes and Teddy Grahams. The thin, swivel head is great for hard to reach places and awkward angles. It is a very well-designed appliance.
I called B&D back and asked them to cancel the replacement. They said not to worry about it; consider it a apology for the inconvenience. Wow.

Customer Review: Best Dustbuster ever
Summary: 5 Stars

I was about ready to give up forever on this type of product. Our previous model would charge for a week, then conk out after about 30 seconds of use. I laughed out loud when I read reviews of this item that complained that it ran out of juice after 10 minutes.

As others have said, it's not whisper-quiet. But it gets the job done. It's true that it has to be emptied, but this unit is much easier and less messy to clean out than any I've owned before.

How many times have you purchased a product that made you glad you had a mess that needed cleaning up? As I was about to hit the sack after the third evening we owned this, I said to my wife: "Hey look. Thank goodness there's some popcorn on the floor. I can handle that in a flash." And so I did, thanks to Black and Decker.

The pivoting nose folds up for relatively compact charging on its little station. I have not attached it to a wall, just set it on a counter in our laundry room.

This product has made pre-party and post-party cleanup a breeze. It's got plenty of power. After a party we had just the other night, my sister-in-law said she was so impressed that she was going to get one for herself.

Customer Review: Black & Decker Hand Vacum
Summary: 2 Stars

I have had this hand vacuum for about 6 months. I really do not like going through the procedure of pressing a button to fold out the pivoting-nose and then to further have to pull out (difficult) little nose end. It is stored on the charger in the fold down position and not ready for use until you press a button and fold out the nose into the angle you want it. For a small woman going through this with a heavy vacuum to start is difficult. Some may like the vacuum nose to be folded in different angles. Not me. It has not been that convenient. I also find it un- convenient to place in the charger. I still fool around with it to get it in the proper place. I am a man and my wife who has some arthritis in her hands simply cannot use it. I plan to replace it today. I like to pickup these handy vacuums and just press the on switch and be in business. With this unit it is like going through a pre-flight on an aircraft (I am a military pilot). It does have good suction but appears to me to lose some of that in an angular position. With the nose fully extended a lot of things are to large to go through the suction head. I like Black and Decker products but am sorry to downgrade this unit is a loser in my opinion.
