Customer Review: Stinkbugs vs. Black and Decker Portable Vacuum
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased a Black and Decker PHV1800CB cordless vacuum primarily for my war against an ongoing stinkbug invasion. I am extremely pleased with the results. Sucks them up every time and somehow they cannot get out again. The cost of the portable vacuum was near that of advertised bug vacuums whose performace has been evaluated as poor by numerous people. I also have used the vacuum to eliminate them from inside my cars, and while I was doing that decided to vacuum the carpet and mats as well. I was pleased to discover it worked quite well as a normal vacuum. It will not relace a typical canister vacuum, but works better than I expected. Perfect for surface dirt, not so much for ground in dirt or pet hair. The charge seems to last quite some time if you consider it is portable. I really like the stand/charger, which while quite large,as it is much easier to manage than the cord and plug in charger which I always seem to misplace. Its reach is another plus as is the ability to rotate the nozzle so you can reach the tops of window sills etc. I am planning on purchasing a second Black and Decker of the same model to keep for upstairs stinkbug combat and those crumbly messes the kids leave behind.

Customer Review: The worst handheld Black & Decker I've ever owned!
Summary: 2 Stars

I am here on Amazon shopping for a new handheld and I see that this item received a very high rating overall, so I thought I'd put my two cents in. I've had this item a bit over a year now, but I've all but forgotten that I own it because it is fairly useless. Like other reviewers, it worked great when I first got it. It seemed strong with good suction, but after a couple of weeks the power seemed to "die out". No emptying, charging or filter cleaning seemed to make a difference. The battery on this one doesn't seem to give adequate run time either. Now, the battery hasn't died yet, like on other models, but maybe that's because I can't stand to use this thing!

Finally, the worst part about this vac is the pivoting nose. It may seem all cutesy and compact, but it really is just poor design. Every time I go to place it back into the charger, large amounts of debris just fall out of the nose. I first experienced this with a small obstruction, which makes sense, but even after I knew better and would empty it before charging, dust would still find a way to sneak out and dirty the base and surrounding area. I don't know what I will purchase next, but anything has got to be better than this!

Customer Review: A little disapointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I have two cats and was looking for a better way to clean up the cat little that spills around the edge of the box.
I had high expectations after reading all the rave reviews, to pick up all the cat litter my cats track out of their litter box. It had powerful suction at first, though it did let a lot of dust through the filters and tended to drop some of the debris as soon as I shut it off. Both filters, there's an accordion pleated paper filter and a plastic filter with tiny holes, became clogged within a week. To clean them, you have to wash them in water. The cat litter dust turned to cement as soon as I did that. I was never able to get the filters completely clean again despite a lot of effort. After that, we stopped using it for cat litter, it's intended purpose, but it continued to become more and more clogged over time, despite repeatedly cleaning the filters. Finally it's suction power is nil. We are throwing it away. I suppose that if you don't use it on clumping cat litter or other materials that may turn to clay or cement upon washing the filters, it might be an okay vacuum if you don't mind a bit of dust blow through.

Customer Review: Black & decker nice product
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this vacuum about 6 months ago.. I used to have a Shark which didn't work half the time and just caused frustration every time I used. I bought this one since it's best selling and well reviewed and now my life is so much easier.
Some concerns I had from reading reviews were the noise level and dusts not staying in after being sucked. Both didn't bother me at all. There are two power levels and the noise level is not that high at low and the suction is still pretty powerful. Between an 1 year old who is scared of regular vacuum's noise and a husband with frequent night shifts, it's hard for me to use a regular vacuum cleaner and this little one helps tremendously to keep my apartment clean. (My 1 year old has lots of fun vacuuming with this. That also helps the apartment clean!)
I found this great for cleaning out the cars and tight spaces The problem with the dusts after suction never happened to my vacuum. I've even experimented to shake after vacuuming and they stayed in.
This is a handy yet powerful, easy to use (easy to empty dust bag) cordless vacuum. A great buy for the money. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Almost perfect with one flaw
Summary: 4 Stars

This vac works perfectly as advertised and the pivoting design is absolutely fantastic for storage. It makes for a much smaller footprint when the charger is placed on the floor or countertop.

Suction is powerful, the two speeds are great, as is the built-in extension nozzle, and it's quick and easy to empty the collection bin.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because of the battery. It is not user-replaceable and I know it will run out eventually in 3-4 years. I have had about 5 or 6 Black & Decker cordless hand vacs and that's been the situation with all of them. The battery eventually dies. Knowing this, I still spent the money on this new model to replace my previous dying dustbuster as I wanted the quality that I've always found in Black & Decker hand vacs. It's just the longevity and disposability of these vacs that annoys me somewhat.

I would think that Black and Decker could easily make this model with a user-replaceable battery but then that may cut into future sales. Still, it's something they should really do -- for the sake of the environment and consumers' wallets.
