Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker PHV1800CB 18-Volt Pivoting-Nose Cordless Handheld Vacuum CleanerCustomer Review: Very Good Machine! Summary: 4 Stars
I have been extremely pleased with this unit except for the filter cleaning. The filter gets really dusty and it's pretty gross (so I put on gloves)trying to get all the lint out. The suction was excellent until the flap inside the pivoting nozzle fell out and is impossible (at home) to be put back. It still worked, but definitely not as well. Then suddenly while vacuuming on high, the power cut out. It sounded like the unit turned itself lower than low power. It also began to get very hot and smelled funny. I shut it off immediately. I cleaned it out completely and let it dry. I then put it back on the charger. The next day I tried to use it again, but after 2 seconds on, it did the same thing. I was very disappointed, since it's my only vacuume (we have hardwood floors)and we mostly just need it for crumbs and such. I checked the manual that came with it and discovered it came with a 2 year warranty! The greatest news, since I've owned mine for 22 months. I phoned their product hotline and was treated very well. They emailed a "free return" label for repairs. I'll write an addendum here as soon as I have my vacuume back...
Customer Review: Good power, awful design. Broken one-way valve allows dirt to spew back out. Frustrating! Summary: 3 Stars
This unit has a rubber "sphincter" or "one way door" which keeps the dirt from coming out right as it reaches the filter. If you find that your vacuum is "regurgitating" everything it picks up its because the little door broke off so there is no way for the dirt to be held back. This one did it to me and its worthless once it happens. Calling black & decker might get you a solution (I gotta try to call them), but its still a pain in the butt.
Power-wise it is strong, battery life is not out of the ordinary. Its decent enough for a few spills and some stairs.
The designers tried to get all creative with this one but IMO it is not a very user friendly design. The filter area can be a mess to deal with and like other users said some buttons are very awkwardly positioned. The nozzle tip can be extended for further and more accurate reach in small cleaning areas, but why would I want to touch the dirty tip of the vacuum to pull the tip out? It looks great sitting around, which is what it does now that it spills everything it sucks up.
I would go for a better more versatile device.
Customer Review: This was a great buy! Highly recommended. Summary: 5 Stars
I'm so glad that I bought this vacuum. I used to have a Shark which didn't work half the time and just caused frustration every time I used. I bought this one since it's best selling and well reviewed and now my life is so much easier.
Two concerns I had from reading reviews were the noise level and dusts not staying in after being sucked. Both didn't bother me at all. There are two power levels and the noise level is not that high at low and the suction is still pretty powerful. Between an 1 year old who is scared of regular vacuum's noise and a husband with frequent night shifts, it's hard for me to use a regular vacuum cleaner and this little one helps tremendously to keep my apartment clean. (My 1 year old has lots of fun vacuuming with this. That also helps the apartment clean!)
The problem with the dusts after suction never happened to my vacuum. I've even experimented to shake after vacuuming and they stayed in.
This is a handy yet powerful, easy to use (easy to empty dust bag) cordless vacuum. A great buy for the money. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Excellent handheld vac for a cat lover Summary: 4 Stars
I had 3 Kone vacuums that looked modern and featured nightlights that were great for the bathroom. But the motors just gave out or the suction dwindled to almost nil after about a year of use. So I decided to shop for a handheld vacuum with good suction, one that would really clean up that kitty litter and perform other tasks that didn't require pulling out my large vacuum.
I've been using this Black and Decker product for 8 months now and it is a handy hardworking Energy
Star Qualified product. The vacuum comes with an attractive charging station and 2 attachments. I had
some trouble understanding how to empty the dust chamber at first and how to change the dust filter but
even a klutz like me quickly learned. I also bought some extra filters and change the filter about once a month. The good news is that the filters may be washed and reused for a few times.
Washing the filters is a bit of a hassle but I'm too frugal to just throw the used one away each time. Otherwise
I am completely satisfied with the performance of this product.
Customer Review: Impressive Summary: 5 Stars
1) heavier than a normal dust buster because of the stronger motor; fells hefty but not too heavy.
2) interesting and functional design: folds up fairly compact, but when in use the snout folds out and the center section of the snout can extend even further for a longer reach or for getting into more narrow spaces
3) the smaller opening of the intake helps create a stronger suction, coupled with the stronger motor it is surprising how much this will pick up. If you have used a traditional dust buster you will immediately realize this one is more of a miniature vacuum disguised as a dust buster.
4) comes with a couple of accessories for special situations, the accessories store nicely on the charging base
5) holds a charge a good long time. also impressive.
6)filter is easy to clean and one can tell easily when it is time to clean it.
Well thought out design, good construction, very good performance. Is a little larger and a little heavier than a traditional dust buster; I think it is well worth it because of the performance.
