Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker PHV1800CB 18-Volt Pivoting-Nose Cordless Handheld Vacuum CleanerCustomer Review: Lost its suction within one month Summary: 1 Stars
I write reviews in two cases, when I am super delighted or completely unsatisfied with the product or service. In case of this vacuum, it is the later.
I bought this vacuum after reading overwhelming positive reviews of the product. When I used it first couple of times, I was quite pleased. However within one month of use, it completely lost its suction. Now it is completely useless. It sits there occupying space and is of no value. I am frustrated because this was one of the expensive models and when you pay more, you expect good service.
I contacted Ron's hardware, the vendor for this product and requested a refund. They sent me a curt reply that It has been more than one month since I bought this so they can not refund it. I don't seem to have any other recourse.
I am writing this review so that others can benefit from my experience and avoid buying this product.
Customer Review: The best in the price range Summary: 5 Stars
Great suction, very good battery life, quick charging, easy to use, not too heavy, doesn't get clogged up easily. Had one of these for over six months and have recommended it, and even bought one for my son at college.
A few small issues that are excusable at this price:
- Cleaning out the dirt catch is a bit inconvenient; there should be a way to get all the dirt out without going in and wiping it down. Blowing it out gets your face dirty.
- That dirt catch is a little too small. 50% larger would be great.
- Not sure why there are two speeds; who wouldn't want to floor it all the time? Could have cut a little expense out of it (or they could have made the catch bigger).
- The "extension" on the end of the snout is a waste of time. Remove it and make the catch bigger.
- One more click up on the angle adjustment would be cool.
Buy this thing!
Customer Review: Powerfull but fussy Summary: 4 Stars
I give this 4 stars instead of fewer because unlike most hand vacs it really does suck things up. But it is fussy to clean. The paper filter gets things in its folds that are impossible to get out -- unless you want to go at it with a tweezers. The hard plastic filter, unfortunately for me, has holes just the right size to fill tightly with SweatScoop brand cat litter. Have to brush hard to get it out. Finally, while removing a large piece of junk caught in the tube I accidentally dislodged the small rubber flap that just hangs by small flanges, rather fragiley, to prevent collected waste from falling back out the tube. After much fussy work and trying to take it all apart I got it back on. BTW -- I have model PHV1800 which Black and Decker says has been discontinued, apparently replaced by this PHV1800CB. I have no idea what the difference is -- maybe they have a better rubber flap system? :).
Customer Review: Definitely powerful, but loud Summary: 4 Stars
I'm pleased with the power of this suction machine, but the previous reviewers who said this thing was loud weren't kidding. I think it's barely tolerable at the low setting, and I feel like I need to use some kind of hearing protection for long stints at the high setting. Like someone else said, the sound is a high-pitched whine, very much like a power drill. I live in a pretty quiet apartment building, and feel like I can only use the low setting (which admittedly is powerful enough) or wait until the day when I know that people are definitely not settling down or asleep. I guess if you live in a detached house this won't matter much, but I can see how pets would be afraid of this thing.
Also, the exhaust vents out the bottom, so if you turn the vac around over a spot you haven't vacuumed yet, it tends to blow stuff around, but I guess this is minor if you keep it in mind.
Customer Review: A lot better hand vacuum than anything I have ever gotten. Summary: 4 Stars
Now granted it is the best hand held vac I have had it does have some up and downs. I have had it for a few months and it has not lost suction and nothing has broken on it but in my opinion the pivoting head is not a astonishing feature... Even when I am trying to get under furniture there is not much the pivot head can do to reach under there very well. The thing that I like about the pivot head is that when stored it does not take up any space, but then again the dock it came with only has one spot to store an attachment so I sometimes misplace one and have to go hunting. Like I said this is a great vacuum for the money, has held up very well, and does what it is supposed to. I got this for in-between cleanings because we have a cocker spaniel whose hairs like to bundle up in corners and it does pick those up no questions asked.
