Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black and Decker CFV1200 DustBuster 12-Volt Cordless VacuumCustomer Review: THE TEST: 1 dog/collie, 2 long hair cats, 2 birds, 2 children Summary: 3 Stars
THE ULTIMATE TEST:
I have a collie (long hair), two very long hair cats, 2 birds, and 2 children (both around 10). We have hardwood floors on the ground floor which is where I mainly use the vacuum. I have a regular vacuum but was hoping that this dustbuster could get the hair from the cats and dog in-between regular vacuums and get the litter mess just outside the litter boxes. I like to keep my house very clean despite the pets so I had strong expectations. I wanted to like this unit (I wanted it to work well) and gave it some time before I reviewed it.
BAD POINTS:
--The unit itself is wide or thick in the middle -so much so that you cannot get under a lot of furniture. I've had other brands in the past (lost the re-charger or I'd still be using them) and all the others were thin or skinny enough to get under a buffet or china cabinet on legs.
--It picks up the cat and dog hair BUT it's not all going into the cup. In fact, I'd say about half of the hair gets clogged in the wheels and roller. I had used it only a couple times when I began having trouble rolling the unit -to the point it felt like I was pushing & pulling weights around. I turned off the unit and flipped it over only to find that the wheels were clocked with tons of cat hair and some dog hair as well. It was so thick I had to get a knife and scissors and spent the next half hour trying to cut out and pick out all the hair. All that work and all for nothing because after using it a few times again, I had to unclog it again. There are two little wheel areas that really get clogged terribly and that's the worst. It's a bit difficult to clean that out. I can't recommend this vac. It's not worth it at all. I would look into a very simple unit and may be get a handheld that's on it's own. This is not a good design. It just dowsn't work so save your money.
--It does not stand on it's own but it does easily stand when placed against something. This is not as bothersome as the other two points above but should still be mentioned.
GOOD POINTS:
--The suction on this thing works very well. It gets the kitty litter without much extra swipes in the same area. It does get the dog and even the fine long cat hair but as I mentioned above, a lot of that ends up in the whells after using it only a few times.
--It lasts quite a long time. I am able to do our entire ground floor with a quick 'sweep' (about 1500 sq ft) as well as the stairs leading upstairs and the litter box areas on all floors.
--Obviously this unit is both a handheld (in two ways) and an upright. That was the big selling point for me. I find I use it for the areas the unit can't reach (which others normaly can) but also for the stairs or around the litter boxes, etc.
--It has a large collection cup unlike other models which often have very small ones.
OVERALL:
I can't recommend it because of the clogging in the wheel & roller areas and also because of the lack of ability to fit under furniture that other brands can get under so easily. On the other hand, I do like having a cordless vacuum and it's versatility as a handheld or upright. Just don't get this one. Find a simple, easy unit that rates well that's a stand up and then get another one that's a handheld. This design sounds like a good idea but there are too many flaws. I hardly use ours now and it's always charged. The broom works better! I do occasionally use the handheld part and understand now why everyone was complaining that you can't charge that on it's own. You need to set that handheld part into the large upright unit in order to charge. SO.. when you give up on the upright (and you will if you have pets), you still need to take up a room for it so you can charge the handheld part. What mistake! Don't get it! Good luck.
Description of Black and Decker CFV1200 DustBuster 12-Volt Cordless VacuumBlack & Decker introduces the innovative DustBuster Cordless Floor Vac ¿ three convenient cordless vacuums in one that provides full room cleaning of carpets, tile and hardwood floors, upholstery and more. Built on the DustBuster heritage of grab n¿ go vacuuming convenience, the DustBuster Cordless Floor Vac is the most powerful cordless vacuum on the market, delivering 12 volts of maximum cleaning power as an upright floor vacuum, full-size hand-held vacuum or a DustBuster hand vac. As an upright floor vacuum, the DustBuster Cordless Floor Vac vacuums both carpeted and hard floor surfaces. With the push of an easy-release button, the DustBuster and 10-inch power brush detaches from the upright handle to become a full-size hand-held vacuum to clean stairs and other small areas. With the push of another easy-release button, the DustBuster detaches from the base of the 10-inch power brush to become a traditional DustBuster hand vac to clean draperies, car interiors and other hard to reach surfaces. A surface selector slide switch maximizes vacuuming performance for both hard and carpeted surfaces. When the switch is in the first position the vacuum turns on and is ready to vacuum hard surfaces. When the switch is in the second position the rotating brush in the power head is activated for cleaning carpeted areas. The DustBuster Cordless Floor Vac offers the added convenience of the Double Action Filter System so that your hands don¿t touch the dirt when emptying. The filter deflects dirt and debris off a primary hard filter into the dirt bowl and captures fine dust in a secondary pleated filter. A versatile unit with cordless convenience, this Black and Decker DustBuster 3-in-1 vacuum is a handy tool around the house and workshop. The machine converts to three different configurations: a full-height floor vacuum, a handheld power brush vacuum, and a compact DustBuster. In each configuration, the vacuum collects dust and debris into a roomy dirt cup, filtering out the smaller particles. Suitable for carpets, hard floors, and upholstery, the 12-volt machine is easy to convert and use. Its connecter switches and power buttons are large and simple, and the 10-inch floor nozzle glides easily. Though not the equal of a full-size vacuum if you have a house full of carpet, the unit is great for kitchens, bathrooms, small hardwood areas, stairs, quick pick-ups, and dry spills. Plus, its cordless power means fast, convenient, unfettered cleaning. The unit comes with a rechargeable battery and a charging unit, as well as a hook for hanging it on the wall. Fully charged (16 hours), the unit runs between 14 and 17 minutes on average. One minor drawback to this model--in its fullest size, the vacuum does not stand up by itself. It is lightweight and maneuverable, however, so this does not present a big problem. In its floor vac shape, the unit stands 42-1/2 inches high. Black and Decker includes a 2-year warranty. --Emily Bedard
