Tools and Hardware Reviews of Blitz 31733 5 Gallon Spill Proof Gas CanCustomer Review: Do not buy this gas container Summary: 1 Stars
I own this product and regret buying it for many reasons. First of all, I went to my local Home Depot over a year ago to find that this was the only brand tank they carried. I bought the 5 gallon size along with the 2 1/2 gallon. When I tried to use it at home, gas would inevitably spill. Apparently, the design of the tank is supposed to create an "automatic shut-off" as a vacuum is created within the container when the spout tip becomes submerged below the level of gas in the receiving tank. No more gas is supposed to pour from the container once this occurs.
The design is faulty for the following reasons:
1. The strength of the vacuum created varies according to the fullness of the container (greatest when the container is full, weakest when it is close to being empty), and unless the vacuum pressure is strong enough, gas will continue to flow (and spill) when it shouldn't. This is especially true for the larger 5 gallon container, but the spilling occurs even with the 2 1/2 gallon.
2. The spout is spring loaded to open when pressure is applied to the rim of the tank you want to fill. It either leaks due to a bad seal when the container is upside down to begin to fill the tank, or it just doesn't open due to friction.
3. An engine is often hot when it needs to be refueled. Any leak of gas on a hot engine is dangerous, wasteful and completely unacceptable.
I called the Blitz company and explained that spilling happened every time and seemed to be unavoidable. They had no explanation other than to say, "That shouldn't happen," and they offered to send me 2 new spouts. When I tried the new spouts, the same problems occurred.
I called Home Depot in Atlanta to explain my experience, they thanked me profusely for my feedback, and they sent me a $35 gift card.
I haven't been back to Home Depot lately to check their offerings of gas containers, but I would be surprised to see them still carrying this poorly designed piece of plastic.
