Tools and Hardware Reviews of Blue Max GEN 4000 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP OHV Gas Powered GeneratorCustomer Review: 15 days of flawless service after Hurricane Ike Summary: 5 Stars
I live on the coastal side of Houston, and ordered this generator as Tropical Storm Eduard approached. I am an Amazon Prime member so I opted for the $3.99 next day delivery! Sure enough as the storm hit and the 40 mph wind blew rain sideways, the ol' UPS truck delivered the little genny to my door! The power never went out with Eduard, so I simply filled it with oil and gas and cranked it up and checked it with an electric drill, then put it away.
Next came Hurricane Ike. I loaned the Blue Max to my son and his family (son + wife + 2 small children) the day after the storm, since they had no power. They ran it 16 to 24 hours a day for 15 days, running a 9000 BTU window unit air conditioner, a freezer, TV, and various other small loads. It has performed flawlessly. It starts on the first pull and runs like a champ. It is relatively quiet, too. Probably too noisy for a campground, but for emergency power failure use, it is not even noticable if you are indoors and it is outside. Even outdoors, it is not objectionable if your are 20' to 30' away.
It used enough oil during the first couple of days for the low-oil shutdown to work (good thing it had a low-oil shutdown!), but I reckon that was the piston ring break-in period, as it has not used any detectable amount since.
I was a little leary of a Chinese lo-buck piece of equipment, but I can't argue with the performance! The value of this little sucker over the last 2 weeks alone has exceeded the price I paid for it!
Customer Review: Great For The Price! Summary: 5 Stars
I decided to buy the Blue Max 4000 to cover occasional power outages in my area. Ordered Feb.15th, received the wheel kit the 21st & the generator on the 25th. Minor damage to the outer box, inner box was
in perfect shape. On removing the generator I noticed the air cleaner cover was broken. Called customer service and was told they would send a new part to me. Seven days later I received a new air cleaner assembly. Standard UPS shipping was acceptable but tracking numbers would have been much appreciated.
As stated in other reviews the wheel kit is somewhat generic but went on without too much trouble, the biggest pain was removing the paint from the bolt threads. I found that if I tipped the generator to the side it was much easier to fill the oil(even with a funnel). I set the unit back down on level ground with the oil at the proper level on the dipstick, flipped the choke lever, opened the gas valve and pulled the starter cord... several times. Nothing. Then I remembered someone saying that the low oil sensor would keep the engine from starting if the oil wasn't filled enough. I filled the oil almost to the edge of the filler tube, pulled the cord and it started right up! I hooked up a pair of small electric heaters(almost 3200W total) to test the output of the generator & it seemed to handle the load without any problems. I haven't had to use it for an actual outage yet, but I expect it to meet my needs when I do. Overall, a good little generator for a great price.
Customer Review: Really a 2800 watt, a little cheap but runs good Summary: 3 Stars
I was a little put off that they advertised it as a 4000W when all others are advertised at constant output rather than peak. They do say 4000W peak in their description if you look hard but never say what is the constant rating. I didn't find out until I got it. If I had known I would have paid $100 more and bought the Eastern Tools version from Amazon and got free/faster shipping and a higher constant output rating w/ a larger engine & twice the run time on a single tank. You can tell the construction quality is chinese, but I knew that when I only paid 219+shipping so I can't complain too much there.
Starter rope is kind of in a weird place right under the gas tank, you have to pull it at an angle which migh shorten the life of the rope, and the rope is too short. manual was worthless and didn't even tell me how much or what kind of oil to use. Rubber isolators seemed a little flimsy but we'll see.
I wouldn't recommend it as a constant use or camping generator but maybe for once per year emergencies, quality just doesn't seem up to much more. It did start easily right out of the box & ran pretty quiet so I went ahead and gave it a 3 star rating. but you do have to choke it each time you start it, even when it's hot.
I purchased from Homier, they didn't provide any automatic shipment notification & shipping was a little slow, about 8 days but I am used to Amazon and their almost immediate shipping.
Customer Review: Great price, fantastic shipping , be prepared with a few tools. Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this with running a sump pump during power outages a priority.
Nothing worse than watching your finished basement flood when you could
have one of these waiting for the disaster. Product arrived sooner than expected, box was damaged (so what)! poured oil, gas into unit,
opened valve and gas poured out of the carb. Waited a couple of days,
read the reviews, realized its spent alot of time traveling from
China to Ohio, removed the air cleaner, tightened up the bolts holding
the carb to the engine, and leak was fixed. Ran air compressor (2hp), frig, tv, pump, all worked well. only used for a few hours to try,
but my thoughts are: this is a cheap generator-get what you pay for.
Not a Honda engine but a honda type OHV 4 cycle. Fuel gage does not work.
Nuts holding down the engine to the frame loose or missing.
This is only my initial experience, for $240.00 shipped, its a 1/3 the
price of something from the local big box store.
If you are willing to deal with some issues that may occur, and want a generator that is working, and easy to start (my 9 year old can start this unit), this is for you. I recommend this for anyone who has
common knowledge of tightening a few bolts that may come loose during
shipment. At 100#, its too costly to send back for something simple.
hope this helps,
Ohio
Customer Review: First Impression: Good Deal Summary: 5 Stars
For $300 delivered to my door (I also got the wheel kit) it seemed like a decent buy. I couldn't find anything near that rated wattage for close to $300. I ordered it on Monday 26-Nov, and received it a week later on Monday 03-Dec. (Although the shipping was prompt, I'm accustomed to being notified when something I get from Amazon ships, and I got no email shipping and tracking notification on this order.)
As a test I hooked up my 1000W work lights and ran a circular saw, and it did fine. It will not run my air compressor, but I didn't expect it to; the compressor has a 4HP motor, which would be ~2950W to run continuous, and it could quite possibly need over 4000W to get it started. This generator has a big honkin' muffler and runs quiet. The documentation that came with it is amusing, it looks like they used software to convert the text to English. So the wheel kit installation instructions were useless, and it didn't fit quite right, so I had to improvise to get the wheels on. But they're 'real' pneumatic wheels, which makes it easier to move the generator around.
My first impression of this generator is good, especially considering the low cost. I bought it to use on a remote piece of property, as well as an emergency backup when we lose power at the house. Unless this thing has serious issues down the road, I think I'll be pleased with it.
