Tools and Hardware Reviews of Blue Max GEN 4000 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP OHV Gas Powered Generator

Customer Review: Excellent Value
Summary: 5 Stars

Great bargain for $240 with free shipping. The generator shipped from Amazon by FedEx and was delivered in two days with super saver shipping with absolutely no damage. The box was even in good shape. From other reviews, I guess that I was lucky with my shipment. I added oil and gas and the generator started on the first pull. It runs well and is fairly quiet for a generator this size, not quite as loud as my lawn mower. I will use this for power outages and primitive camping in my travel trailer. It runs the 13,500 BTU AC and lights/refrigerator all at one time with no problem. I just had to choke up the generator a tad when I turned the AC on, then was able to choke it back down once the AC started. It weighs about 100 pounds. I can pick it up and put it in the bed of my truck. I didn't opt for the wheels, and I can move it easily with a hand truck.

Customer Review: The jury is still out on the generator..... UPDATE: the verdict is in........

I bought this generator on June 08, 2008. It arrived with broken and missing parts. Amazon said they would not allow me to ship it back (due to having a gasoline engine) and they do not carry any parts. I finally located a distributor in St. Louis who sold me the parts I needed. And Amazon gave me a $50 refund toward those parts. The generator ran one time, then became increasingly difficult to start. Finally, it wouldn't fire at all. I took it to a certified small engine shop and was told it only had 35 lbs of compression and was suppose to have 125+. After 5 long months of "deliberation", and having to file a dispute with my credit card company, Amazon refunded the remaining portion of the purchase price. I guess I was lucky. Other than the long wait, I am only out the $30 that the small engine shop charged me to prove it was a bad engine.

Customer Review: A good generator for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

Received the first unit in a short period of time, however it was damaged in transit. Amazon shipped a replacement which arrived in just two days,( fantastic ) however this one was also damaged in transit, but was fixable. It would be nice if whoever is packing these units would add a support under the rail to which the generator and engine are attached. Be sure to check all fasteners to be sure that they are tight, this is very important. I added oil and gas, pulled two times and away we went. I have run this unit two times for about fifteen minutes each time and the unit has started on the second pull each time. I ran a leaf blower and a skill saw at the same time and it did just fine. I bought this unit to run my sump pump in case of a power failure and I am sure that it will do just fine. For the money I paid, I believe this to be a good value.

Customer Review: Good value for the money - bad packaging for shipping

My thoughts are similar to many others: It is a good value for the money, it runs very quiet, starts easily and will be a good emergency generator. Documentation is poor, shipping carton is worse. Mine came with the air filter cover broken. I immediately emailed amazon as well as homier. Homier couldn't find my order and amazon says the part is not available separately. This is in spite of several other posters saying they got replacement parts. Amazon did offer to ship me another generator, which is kind of a pain or I would have done it. But the funniest thing is they asked if I wanted another generator or would I accept a 10% credit, then went ahead and processed the credit before I answered! I'm taking the credit just to be done with it, but wanted to warn others if there is more serious damage you will want to get a replacement.

Customer Review: The usual problems apparently, but with a bad new twist
Summary: 2 Stars

I too received a generator with shttered mounts in an otherwise un-damaged box. Oddly, I am told becuse the generator is hazardous I cannot return it through normal routes, and Amazon will contact me with a resolution. For now, until they get this issue resolved, I would suggest waiting on this. It seems to be a constant issue that would be EASILY preventable by the insertion of styrofoam blocks inside to support the generator while its in transit. The shear weight of the motor and dynamo overwhelm the mounts and in my case, the actual motor itself cracked and tore free. This is a simple case of trying to save 4$ on foam, and I guarantee that more than that has been wasted on return postage.

Dont buy until I post an update that Amazon has remedied its "you cant return this, its hazardous material" issue.
