Tools and Hardware Reviews of Blue Max GEN1250 1,250 Watt 2 HP 2-Cycle Gas-Powered GeneratorCustomer Review: Great. Summary: 5 Stars
I recieved my iten from Homier Distributing, and would buy from Homier again. I recieved my generator in 5 days from ordering it. It took Homier 2 days to pack and ship it, 3 days to get here. Recieved item on a Saturday! in VERY good condition.
Performance of the Generator. Well, first of all I bought this for unexpected power outages. and..... whatever came up over the years that required it (you never know). I dont believe I will be dissapointed. I fueled it with standard unleaded and the correct mixture (50:1) 2 stroke generic oil, the first time starting it it started great. Not one problem. I shut the unit off after several minutes of the motor being at idle. moved it, and started it again for 50 minutes at idle. I then hooked up a Electric Heater after the motor passed my little burnin excercise at idle. At load, the unit can produce 800 Watts constant safely as designed, knowing this, i used the heater on low (750W). The second I turned on the heater, the generator went to full power and worked Absolutely Great until it ran out of fuel 10 minutes later. (note, i put less than a quarter gallon of fuel in the tank)
That is my only use of this product so far, and the little excercise I gave it to burn in, im convinced it should last until I need a higher capacity model in the future years. Only time can tell, but at first glance, im VERY happy with this generator.
Customer Review: Junk, you get what you pay for Summary: 1 Stars
I was looking around fo a small generator when this one showed up on Amazon; with over 70 reviews and a 3 star average I figured what the heck how bad could it be... WELL ITS WORSE THAN I COULD HAVE IMAGINED.
Where to being..
First this thing is won't run at 110v volts, the best mine would idle at was around 85 volts! Forget about even trying to run anything, I read online people said to adjust the idle screw until it goes up to 110v. Well even after doing that it hardly solved anything, the unit would strugle just to run a measly 55 watt table fan surging between 80 and 140 volts! I was worried for my fan so I let run a whole gallon. After running a whole gallon of fuel I tried again, SAME NONSE, surging "RANG RANNNG RANNNNGGGGG RANGGGG GANGANG" Ugh... Kick this thing...
Finally the stupid thing dies and now it makes NO VOLTS, if you attach ANYTHING to the output the generator makes a grumbling noise and the volt meter reads 0 volts.
This thing is garbage and you should stay away from it. Spend the extra and get a inverter generator or you'll be in for a big head ache.
ALSO, this thing is a FUEL SUCKING HOG, even on idle it sucked up a whole gallon of fuel in about 2 hours, can't imagine what it would do on full / half load (if you could ever get their, mine would poop-out at just 55 watts).
0/100, F-, FAIL!
Customer Review: Best buy online for what it is. Very pleased Summary: 4 Stars
1250 Generator
I received mine two days ago and am very pleased. It arrived in perfect condition with no damage to the inner box. It was well packed. My initial impression that it is of reasonable quality for the price paid ( $112.00 with free shipping).
After fueling with premix the machine started on the third pull. After few minutes warm up/ run in I loaded the machine. I tested the machine with a space heater with 600W, 900W and 1500W selectable load settings. It handled the 600 and 900W setting just fine with reasonable noise. The 1500w setting was clearly overloading the machine with out put voltage dropping to ~90V.One thing that I noticed is that this small machine's output voltage (and likely frequency) will swing allot with load changes (not surprising) .
I plan on using it to supply power to my conversion van for lighting and battery charging. It's small size will allow it to fit in a small stowage area formally used to stow a propane cylinder. It may power the small space heater as well. I am not sure that it can handle the refrigerator and water heater. I will not be using to power any electronic devices with out going though some sort of surge suppressor or power conditioner such as a UPS.
This is a initial review and may be up dated latter.
Customer Review: More shipping damage Summary: 3 Stars
Thankfully, someone else had the same problem so we knew what to look for. I spent five minutes trying to get it to start... kept running for a sec and knocking out. The ceramic on the spark plug had a hairline crack. The spark plug is placed in such a way that this is BOUND to happen to most of the units shipped. They ought to ship the unit with the plug in the parts bag.
The good news is that a spark plug from a 77 Dodge van with a 318 fits perfectly.
It started on the first pull after that.
It works well, was a heck of a good value and comes in handy for camping out and powering our tool shed's lights and power tools (small ones). Its actually easier to carry the generator than run a 100 foot extention cord. The 12 volt battery charger is also a great feature!
My suggestion to anyone buying one is to make sure they run GOOD 2 cycle oil (Echo, Stihl, Husquvarna, etc). The outboard engine stuff isnt as good as brand name chainsaw oils. You'll likely get many more years of service out of it with good oil. Also drain the gas if you are storing for more than a couple of weeks, and make sure you ran the unit out of gas so none is left in the carb. Gas sours quickly and will mess up a carb in short order.
Customer Review: You Get What You Pay For Summary: 1 Stars
It is still true "you get what you pay for". The second after I opened the box, I was disappointed. I could clearly see this was not a quality product. If you intend to use this generator for backup power during an outage, this is not the right product for you. Occasional recreational light use would probably be fine. The generator would not stay running and the pull-start broke on the 7th pull. Amazon shipped me a replacement and it arrived severely damaged. Having just lived through Hurricane Ike in Houston, I can tell you first hand you will need a dependable generator. Our power was out for over a week and some people I know did not have power for three weeks. During outages you will really depend on your generator to keep your refrigerator running, charging cell phones, running a fan to stay cool, lights in the evening, and running a DVD player for the kids. You will be praying your generator keeps running. Fortunately for us our large generator worked well during the outage. We purchased this smaller generator to save gas during times we did not need a lot of power. I am sorry that I didn't purchase a better quality product. Even at this low price, this generator is not a good deal.
