Tools and Hardware Reviews of Blue Max GEN1250 1,250 Watt 2 HP 2-Cycle Gas-Powered GeneratorCustomer Review: Guess it's OK for the price Summary: 2 Stars
Not exactly sure what I was expecting for $115 generator. I guess as long as you don't try to do too much with it, it is ok. I bought this to run a small (4800 BTU, 530w) air conditioner. It will not do it. The second the compressor kicks on the generator stumbles which kicks the compressor back off. I have verified the specifications of the AC unit and they do not exceed the specifications of the generator for continous power or for peak/spike power. Guess I should have known better.
But for general use it seems to operate fine. I have experimented with other items to see how it handles them. I have a pair of 250w halogen shop lights. It will light one light fine, seems to strain a little with both lights on. Seems fine for short bursts with a circular saw. Don't try to cut longer than about 30 seconds though.
Customer Review: 1st impressions Summary: 5 Stars
Ordered on Monday, recieved on Wednesday... Wow. Considering how many people in Hurricane areas are/should be buying generators I am really suprised - Amazon told me not to expect it until at least Friday.
Haven't started it yet, but the unit shows no damage - not even the feedback mentioned "broken sparkplug" problem. Very impressed so far. More feedback after some runtime...
UPDATE#1: Took it home, gassed it up with 50:1 and fired it up on the 3rd pull. Warmed up nicely and ran a dremel tool just fine. Have to run a voltmeter/load check to see exactly how well it is producing but so far it's 100%. Sure, it's a "no frills" generator, but it looks like it's going to work just fine in any reasonable application I have for it (keep 2 sump pumps running). Not bad for $100. Not bad at all.
Customer Review: Does just what it claims Summary: 5 Stars
I got this from Amazona month ago in great condition. It started on the third pull and still does. It runs small tools on my house-building site such as a sawsall or drill. I have used it in a pinch to run a skillsaw but it really is too small for that. It is running a bit rich but has only about 5 hours on it so I won't lean it out until it is broken in. It does just what it should for a small generator. It is louder than some which cost 5 to 8 times as much and it does make a bit of smoke as I'm running it with 32 to 1 oil mix. After another gallon of premix it gets 50 to one. I plan to carry it camping for when I need a battery recharge too. There is no worry about low oil as it is a two stroke. All in all I find it a great machine. How can they make this and sell it for $100? Unbelievable!
Customer Review: Unsafe voltage levels / Unrealistic Wattage Rating Summary: 1 Stars
After starting this up to test it when it was delivered I wanted to check that it was delivering at least close to a regulated voltage level before plugging anything into it. So I got out my volt meter and found that it was putting out 140+ volts AC and 22 volts DC at idle! This 20-80% over voltage is enough to damage sensitive appliances and devices. Once under load it will of course drop.
Putting this in use revealed that the true output is approximately 90 watts, at least on my model. That's less than 1 amp at 120v, and of course when I am loading it with more than one amp the voltage drops below 100v. Pretty inefficient, and only able to power one low-powered computer.
I got a bad one I guess but Amazon made things right on it at least. So 5 stars to Amazon.
Customer Review: It works, but a bit rough Summary: 3 Stars
Unit was shipped loose in a cardboard box that was totally destroyed upon arrival. The generator looked OK so it was fueled and started - after six or seven pulls of the starter rope. It will not idle without about 1/2 choke. However, it does provide 120 v power, and after warm-up needs almost a full choke setting to run. I suspect there is something wrong with the carb-fuel induction system. Sounds like I will have to pull it down and check the carb diaphragm.
Low cost was the reason I bought it so I got what I paid for. No complaints with it yet. This generator design is offered by several distributors and others (about the same price range) may have better assembly.
Very light weight and noise level is acceptable for an emergency power system.
