Tools and Hardware Reviews of Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered GeneratorCustomer Review: Outstanding Generator Summary: 5 Stars
I was a tad leery before purchasing this generator, concerned that it may be cheap in quality with a short lifespan. I couldn't have been more wrong. Let me start by saying this is my first review I've ever posted and felt compelled to do so. I purchased this generator 2 1/2 years ago and used it a good bit the first few months then put it away in a storage building out back. I intended to drain all the gas from it but like a dope I forgot all about it.
Fast forward almost 2 years later... I had a prolonged power outage so I went to dig out my generator I stored when to my horror I realized what a knot-head I was. I just knew it was going to need some servicing, I was just hoping the repairmen would be gentle with me. I decided to change the oil before doing anything and then crossing my fingers I tried to start it up. 2 pulls, yes just 2 pulls and it started right up! I was floored and couldn't believe just how great the quality of this product is.
I feel compelled to repeat what others have said such as how surprisingly quiet it is. When I use the generator I keep it on my front porch, when I close the door I can't hear it at all and I'm in my recliner just a few feet from the door. It has an excellent run time on a full tank of gas and puts out more power than I dared to even hoped for. Maintenance is as easy as it can be (when you actually do it LOL), changing the oil is a breeze and restarting it couldn't be easier. The ONLY negative thing about this generator is the weight. You really, REALLY need to purchase the wheel kit as this gen is very heavy.
So if you listen to just 1 review then take my advice, you'll feel this is the smartest move you've ever made. For the price you pay, I truly believe the company is cheating itself. I would recommend this to any and everybody I know. Enjoy your new generator, I know I do! :)
Customer Review: Nearly Perfect Out of the Box Summary: 5 Stars
Ordered on a Friday and received delivery the following Wednesday using Free Shipping. Delivered by a very helpful UPS driver (carried into garage for my wife) with absolutely no damage. Generator was packed very well in the box (with particle board reinforcements bottom and sides. If there would have been damage, would have been from mishandling and not poor packaging. Two instruction booklets, one for the generator and a separate one for the 4-stroke engine, were in a plastic baggie tucked under the engine. Both were written well, no typos and understandable. Got it ready to go, oiled up and gassed up. As mentioned by others, the oil filler cap is low but, I had already stopped by the local auto parts store and picked up a $2 flexible spout funnel. One little problem, the pull start handle had been installed at 2:00 o'clock rather than 10:00 o'clock as the pictures indicate. That required pulling out to avoid the protective bar cage. Fortunately, the engine fired on the second pull and purred like a kitten. Let it sit and tried again, started on the second pull again. I'm very pleased so far, without stress testing the unit. After an ice storm that left power out for a week, I bought the generator for emergencies. Had my gas furnace wired with a two-way switch and pigtail. Threw the switch to the generator, turned on the furnace fan, started without any noticeable effect on the generator. Frankly, I hope to not have to use the generator often but, I certainly feel more secure.
Customer Review: GOOD VALUE FOR THE $$ Summary: 5 Stars
I live near the Gulf coast in Texas & of course are susceptible to the occasional hurricane & power outages, so, a portable generator on hand is a good idea. After checking prices, etc. I chose this one (a little over $300.00). Unit arrived via UPS (110 lbs) in good shape. Unpacked it, read the engine instruction manual, snugged up all the bolts I could see (many were not tight as I thought they should be), put 20 oz of 10W30 oil in using a transmission funnel, added gas with "Stabile" gas treatment (for long storage), turned on the fuel pet-cock, pulled the rope & "viola"; fired up with the first pull! Plugged a couple of items into the outlets - everything seems to work as advertised. Not as quiet compared to a Honda generator, but acceptable (interesting because engine is built under license from Honda..??) To shut it off, I closed the fuel pet-cock & let it burn all the gas from the carburater (for storage). I found a furniture moving dolly at the local Harbor Freight store for $11.00. Generator fits perfectly on the wooden rails & with four hook type bolts & nuts over the generator frame thru the boards, I can move it anywhere on a hard surface with one finger. (I wouldn't recommend the dolly for use on bare ground, grass, etc, as it wouldn't roll easy with the narrow wheels...) I also noticed that generators at Harbor Freight were almost identical to mine but at a much higher price (plus sales tax). All in all, I think this was a good buy.......
Customer Review: nice generator Summary: 5 Stars
this is a nice generator. when i got it i was surprised it started with only a couple of pulls. it has always started for me with only a couple pulls. very easy starting machine. runs wonderfully well. very smooth operating machine. it runs everything i need it too run. have used it more than a few times. i am very happy with this generator. the best part was the price. i couldnt belive how cheap it was. i paid $211.00 for it. around where I live you cant touch a 4000 watt generator for that. They are much more expensive than that. This is a new generator not a used one I bought. One bit of advice I would offer is make sure you get the wheel kit for it. It is heavier than you might think. I ended up having to get the wheel kit after I got the generator. The seller of this item was also very good to do business with. Homier Distributing. They were very helpful when I contacted them for a parts list. the manuel doesnt have one so I requested one in case I ever want to get any parts for it. I kind of dout that ill need to though. It seems to be a well made machine. In review I would say to anyone thinking about getting a generator this is an excellent choice. Cant beat the price either. Try buying one in a store for the same price and see. Be prepared to spend a lot more.
Customer Review: I got a lemon and have to eat it! Summary: 1 Stars
I needed a generator as a back-up power supply in case of power outages at my home. I purchased a Blue Max 4000 several months ago, took it out of the box, and got it running. I was pleased with its quiet operation and it seemed to be working fine. I shut it off and put it away until I needed it a few months later. Again, it started well and worked fine--at first. But after about 15-20 minutes, it quit producing power. This is how it always works: it runs great for a few minutes and produces power perfectly, then suddenly the voltmeter goes to zero and there's no power. Since by the time I discoverd this it was too late to return it to Amazon, and I knew shipping it back would be costly anyway, I tried to see if I could figure out what was wrong with it. I figured it was a simple loose wire somewhere or something, but eventually I was told by an electric motor shop that for it to act like it does it must have a short in the generator windings, and the generator itself will need to be replaced. I'm doubtful I can find that part without paying almost the cost of a whole new unit. So I guess I'm left with a totally worthless generator. I would discourage anyone from buying this generator, since you might have the same bad experience I have had.
