Tools and Hardware Reviews of Brita 35548 Classic PitcherCustomer Review: Soot is left in the bottom of pitcher--not my idea of "pure" Summary: 2 StarsI could no longer stand the smell and taste of chlorination in the city water, so I bought this Brita pitcher and some replacement filters. The water from the pitcher tastes just like water should taste (not like much!). However, as some other reviews have noted, there are fine dark specks at the bottom of my pitcher. I soaked the filter and followed all of the directions for preparation of my pitcher/filter just as the instructions provided described. After multiple (10+) fillings of the pitcher (not including the first two I "threw out" per the instructions), this fine powder/specks keep appearing. I'm a grad. student (read: I'm cheap), so I haven't thrown out this filter and tried a new one. I am hoping it is just this one filter, but from the reviews, I am thinking that this is going to be a recurring problem. I have not tasted the "carbon" or "charcoal" taste that others have mentioned. But I also don't stir up the water in the pitcher and I don't drink the last 1/4 to 1/3 of the water in the pitcher. This seems to keep the soot in the bottom of the pitcher and out of my glass.
The pitcher is pretty wide, but I don't have one of those fancy side-by-side refrigerators. So, width isn't an issue. Also, the handle seems very flimsy. I think this will probably be the first thing to break. The filtering reservoir could fit into the rest of the pitcher a little tighter, but I haven't had an issue with it falling out or coming loose during pouring. The filter does fit into the reservoir very firmly. It is a little tough to get it out, even.
Bottom line: The pitcher removes even Gainesville's nasty taste/smell from the water, but the construction of the pitcher is questionable (especially for the price of the pitcher!) and I am simply trading one impurity (chlorine taste) for another (soot). Buyer beware.
