Tools and Hardware Reviews of Brita 42201 On Tap Filtration System, WhiteCustomer Review: Like sands through the hourglass Summary: 1 Stars
I'm convenience-oriented. Having upgraded from the Brita pitcher, to the multi-gallon unit, and then getting the Faucet Filter I was excited for an improved Brita medium. Finally! No more soaking the filters, washing the container, refilling the container. Xanadu had arrived. The Faucet Filter worked superbly for 3 weeks, and then without warning its flow rate dropped to 1/10th the speed of a meandering trickle in January going uphill with a wind in its face. And yet the little green blinker indicated everything was a-ok. What I call the "Automated Water Filter Useless Light", or AWFUL, showed thumbs-up. So I timed it, because I am a [curious person] who does things like quantify product dissatisfaction. From the 2-gallon Brita UltraMax dispenser it took 32 seconds of joy to fill a 1 quart container to the brim. Yet, the same size jug from the faucet Brita took 2 minutes, 3 seconds. When you watch a tablespoon or cup of water drip to completeness it is as if your life is wasting before your eyes.Using this product is not unlike being stuck in gridlock, only less pleasurable.
Customer Review: Good product, with a few problems. Summary: 4 Stars
I have been through 2 of these units in about 5.5 years. I had to replace them when the 3-way stream selector broke down and would not switch. I wonder if it was due to calcium build-up. I tried dipping it in diluted white vinegar for a few hours, but that did not work either. As I had to replace it anyway, I broke open the unit to try and figure out the problem, but could not break the lower part of the device where the selector switch is located.
I got a new unit last week and now its light has failed completely. I will return and get a new one... Did Brita reduce the quality of the product? Because this did not happen to me before.
I never had any bacteria build up and I clean the unit every time I replace the cartridge. No leakage problems either: I clean the filter that comes right after the tap: particles collected over a period deposit here and if they are cleaned yearly, I do not have any leakage. The cartridge goes for about 4-6 months for us. The 4 stars is only because I think the selector switch goes bad for me probably before its time.
Customer Review: Does What It Is intended To Do Summary: 4 Stars
As other reviewers have noted, the flow of water does slow down to a trickle as the filter accumulates particulates. It is bothersome, but I think it is an indicator of the filter functioning properly. We have very hard water and the improvement in taste from using the system makes the bother of the slower flow negligible. We have to replace our filters about every 2 months because of the hard water and the whole system about every 2 years (the connection to the tap leaks over time - hence 4 stars instead of 5).
Some reviewers have mentioned bacteria growing as a result of using Brita filters. Brita states that the filter is not for removing bacteria. If a bacterium is growing, it is a problem with the water, not the filter. In our case, we draw water from a well. It passes through a UV filter before entering the home water supply. The UV filter kills any bacteria present and is the way to go if you are trying to eliminate the nasty stuff that a Brita filter will not.
Customer Review: Great with a few modifications! Summary: 3 Stars
They really should sell a product that is ready to use off the shelf, but that is simply not the case here. I do recommend this filter, but it does take a little work to perfect.
When you get your filter do not actually put it on. Brita has great customer service. Call them! Get them to send you the metal attachment pieces that connect your Brita to your faucet. Or figure out which one is the right one to use and go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a metal one. Replacing this piece is the only way to make the filter function. The plastic threads strip almost instantly.
Once you replace this piece, your filter is useful and will hopefully live to be the best water filter you have ever used, as has mine.
If you have further problems, again Brita has great customer service in my experience. Call them and they will fairly easily send you a whole new unit if that is what you need.
This should help:

Customer Review: Do Not Waste Your Money! Summary: 1 Stars
I have purchased two of these, one at home and one at the office, and I will never buy another one (nor should you). The threads on the filter where it attaches to the plastic faucet adapter that Brita also provides will not tighten properly. As you try to tighten it, the pressure causes it to skip to a looser thread. Even if you remove the plastic seal (aka washer) to allow you more leeway to tighten, it will not stay attached to the cheap plastic adapter...I can't tell you how many times the pressure has built up so much that the entire filter rockets off the faucet spraying cold water in my face. If I was not awake before...
So I just today purchased a second one for my office...thinking that perhaps maybe I got a bad one at home...I mean they can't all possibly made so poorly...I was wrong. I have the same exact problem with the new one.
Please don't waste your money on this piece of crap.
