Tools and Hardware Reviews of Brita 42633 Faucet Filtration System, Black/Chrome

Customer Review: The water taste great!
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this with the intent of buying less spring water and trying to filter and drink tap water. I have not drank tap water in over 7 years and the tap water where I live taste disgusting ( I drank some on accident once). I used this filter and the water is spectacular! I was pleasantly surprised. I must admit I was pessimistic and did not think it would actually change the taste of the water but it really did.

Before I went with this particular filter I looked at comparisons of the various one's available. I looked at what chemicals etc... they state they remove from the water and compared it to what is most harmful and likely to be present in the water.

Although this filter did not filter the MOST chemicals out of tap water compared to some of the others. It was sufficient for my needs and within my price range. As far as I am concerned you get a lot for $15 bucks, which is what I will pay after my $10 rebate. Compared to some of the more expensive ones that were over $100 and did not do much more.

One problem I did find with this filter is that the washers that come with it to install it are cheap! When I turned on the water after installing the faucet with the accompanying tools it just fell right off.

I went to Lowes and took the washer etc... that came with it for the size information and one of the associates helped me find one that would fit and stay on. And it was less than $1. I installed it with what I purchased from Lowes and now it is perfect. Doesn't move a bit.

I would definitely recommend this product, but just keep in mind if you have to use one of the 2 pieces for the faucet head, on your sink you will most likely need to go buy your own (less than $1) if you actually want it to stay on!

Customer Review: So Far So Good
Summary: 5 Stars

I was cautious after reading the disgruntled reviewers state the Brita On Tap's alleged weaknesses but figured it was so easy to put on and take off that worst case scenario I'd just return it. The first thing I learned is that my sink faucet has threads on the inside. This means I had to use the Brita's included adapter. The adapter fit easily but without the washer. I could never get it on with the washer attached. This would be a problem if I had leaks or erratic water flow but so far that has not been a problem. After installing the base system to the faucet three minutes later, I was done. Now it was time for the taste test. Very good. The water didn't have the normal bad aftertaste from normal tap water and I'm now poised to cancel my water delivery, which is costing me about 650 dollars a year and which for all I know has more impurities than the company is willing to divulge. Compared to my Brita system--30 dollars for the unit and then 60 dollars a year in filters (every 3 months you have to buy a 15 dollar filter), I'd say I'm ahead more than 500 dollars a year. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Update: I discovered I couldn't put in the supplied washer in with the adapter because the old washer was "hiding" in the faucet. Once I took out the old washer, I was able to put on the adapter as prescribed in Brita's instructions. I tightened firmly by hand and there are no leaks or spattering problems. For the money, a very good unit indeed.

Second Update on 1-12-10

After 3.5 years, the system finally started leaking all over the place. A $30 system that lasts that long still seems like a fair deal.

Customer Review: Unfortunately this is the best faucet filter out there
Summary: 3 Stars

I've gone through a number of faucet mount filters. Having filtered water available for my family means a lot to me as the possibility of having harmful contaminates in our system is high (in our neighborhood the city still has lead pipes to deliver the water to our house). Our family cannot afford the hefty cost of a built in system nor can we afford to lose any storage space in our little home. The Pur system broke within a month's use, spraying water everywhere. There was no way I was going to buy that product again - even though I could get the filters cheaper than Brita's. The Brita system generally works for about 1-2 years. We recently had to replace our existing one as the indicator light no longer worked after 18 months of use plus, it had developed minor drips at it's joints. Our faucet does not require any adapters to install the product, I install it within 5-6 minutes without any tools and does a good job filtering my water and letting me know when to change the filter (every 1-2 months) - A+ in my book. But, the short life span and higher cost filters bring down my estimation of this product.
Other reviewers have questioned weather the sensor actually works or can be "reset." I have had false readings on when a new the filter was spent, but it is generally due to a dirty sensor, which is easily cleaned with a pipe cleaner once the filter is removed. But, I have never been able to "reset" the filter life by removing the spent filter and replacing it into the mount. It will always tell me the used filter is dirty. I actually like this because it really is telling me when a filter to dirty to use.

Customer Review: Find a Metal Faucet Adapter and It's All Good
Summary: 4 Stars

As many other reviewers have noted, the included faucet adapters leave much to be desired. My attempts to install this filter with the included adapter all resulted in the filter rocketing away from the faucet with a nice 'boom' sound the moment I turned on the water.

As best as I can tell, the adapter has two flaws: the thread diameter is too small, and the thread length is too short. These two mistakes combine to cause the adapter thread to slip on the filter thread with relatively little force. In my case, merely screwing in the filter by hand was enough to cause it to slip (e.g. if you turn a lid on a glass jar hard enough, the threads will slip and the lid will loosen). As far as I can tell, the plastics used are good ones, so I am forced to conclude that this is a design or manufacturing problem. If you plan to buy this product, I strongly recommend finding or buying the metal adapter you need (few bucks at a hardware store, or about $10 after shipping online).

So why give this a good rating? Because once I installed a metal adapter (from an older water filter), this filter has worked beautifully. The water tastes good. The green indicator light and the spray mode are nice touches. If it had come with a working adapter, I'd give it 5 stars. And if I had to go out and buy an adapter, I'd give it 1 star.

Also be aware that all water will now come out about 1.5 inches below the faucet, which can make filling or cleaning large pots or kettles a little more annoying than before.

Customer Review: Faulty Defective Design
Summary: 1 Stars

We have used the white sink attachment design in the past; but stores here favor the black new design. This design leaks through the light window, which shone red on its light upon its use continuously - no green here. Leaks then happened around the replacement filter and the faucet sprout where it was attached. After getting one replacement by Brita (they had a nice customer service rep who said that the company had a different company and/or design concocted).

The replacement attachment (also black) - not only leaked around the small threaded cap, but under any extended time (over two minutes) or an increase in water pressure it blew off the faucet causing massive water sprays and broken dishes when the filter landed on them. Another call to the Brita people lead to them sending what they thought would be the "correct" threads for the faucet. When the three connector threads arrived, NONE of them fit the faucet and their filter correctly. After 6 years of buying Brita filters (and never having a past problem with them) we are tossing the filter and the replacement filters in the trash and starting on a new brand - Du Pont's. Hope this one will work out better. Don't say you weren't warned!
